Muslim bin Aqeel was the cousin of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and was sent as his ambassador to Kufa to gauge the support of its people before Imam Hussain’s arrival.
Despite being betrayed by the people of Kufa, he remained loyal and fought bravely before being martyred.
Muslim bin Aqeel (A.S.), during his trial before Ibn Ziyad, was asked to recognize Ibn Ziyad as his Ameer (leader/ruler). Muslim (A.S.) courageously replied:
> "By Allah, I will never give my hand to you like a humiliated person, nor will I ever acknowledge you as my Ameer. My Ameer is only Hussain ibn Ali!"
