๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ The 26-year-old Indian, who won a silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics, defended brilliantly and rode on her attack to outclass the fourth-seeded Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20 in a 56-minute quarterfinal clash at the Musashino Forest Plaza.

The sixth seeded Indian came into the match with a 11-7 head-to-head count against the Japanese, whom she had last beaten at the All England Championship in March this year.
Yamaguchi tried to play an aggressive game but Sindhu held her ground and used her good anticipation and reach to stay ahead. The Indian brought out her attacking smashes and half smashes whenever there was a chance to put pressure on her rival.
The opening game saw Sindhu quickly erase a 2-4 deficit to level the scores at 6-6. Yamaguchi committed three back-to-back unforced errors to allow the Indian to move ahead as Sindhu entered the interval at 11-7 with a cross-court smash.
Sindhu used her forecourt well and took charge of the net. The duo played some good rallies at a good pace but Yamaguchi couldn't find an answer in the exchanges. The Japanese was also too erratic.
Sindhu eventually produced a winner near the net and grabbed the first game when Yamaguchi sent long a return to serve.
Sindhu dictated the pace and seemed in total control, starting the second game with two superb smashes for a 2-0 early lead. She kept her unforced errors to the bare minimum even as Yamaguchi committed a service error and playing against the drift, struggled to keep the shuttle in.
A superb net dribble and a cross-court smash helped Sindhu to again take a five-point advantage at the break. However, Yamaguchi, lagging 8-13, grabbed eight of the next nine points to open up a slender one-point lead at 16-15 for the first time in the match.
The only time Yamaguchi, who is known for her retrieving skills, could drag Sindhu into an energy-sapping rally was at 15-13 when the duo had an extraordinary 54-stroke exchange. It ended with Yamaguchi sending the shuttle at the backhand of Sindhu, who was gasping for breath.
With Yamaguchi defending well, Sindhu was forced to go close to the lines. She made errors in the process as the Japanese led 18-16.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ The 32-year-old two-time Asian Championships bronze-winner Indian was helped by Brown's poor footwork throughout the bout though he did end up sustaining a cut on his forehead.
Next up for Satish is Uzebkistan's Bakhodir Jalolov, the reigning world and Asian champion. Jalolov out-punched Azerbaijan's Mahammad Abdullayev 5-0 in his last-16 bout.
Satish, also a 2018 Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, dominated with his right hand and allowed Brown to repeatedly make the mistake of lunging in with very little balance.
Brown seemed to be looking for that one big punch that could unsettle the Indian but failed miserably, owing to his inability to move quickly enough.
The Indian, in comparison, was light on his feet and thereby sharper in responding to Brown's attacks.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ P.V.Sindhu looking ready for tougher opposition, got past a tricky rival in Mia Blichfeldt 21-15, 21-13 for a place in the quarterfinals of the Olympics badminton competition on Thursday, July 29, 2021.

On Friday, Sindhu plays fourth-seeded home favourite Akane Yamaguchi, who defeated 12th-seeded Korean Kim Gaeun 21-17, 21-18.

Sindhuโ€™s fifth victory over the Danish rival in six encounters was also her easiest in terms of points conceded. In the months leading to her World title in 2019, the lanky Indian beat Mia thrice.

This year, when competitions began in January, Mia surprised Sindhu in three games at the Thailand Open before the Indian avenged the loss at the Swiss Open in March.

On this day, Sindhu dropped the first two points and never trailed thereafter. Barring a brief period during the first game when she let Mia rally from 6-13 to close the gap to 15-16, Sindhu stayed in ontrol.

In fact, the decisive swing in the contest came when Sindhu won the last five points of the first game and the first five points of the second. The 10-point streak underlined Sindhu's resolve and severely dented Mia's hopes of recovery. Despite her best efforts, Mia stayed at least three points behind Sindhu most of the time.

The first game was well contested. Sindhu displayed a fine variety of strokes and was quick to attack on both flanks as she kept increasing the lead. If Mia managed to close the gap, it was mainly because she found a way to push Sindhu away from the net and then unleash down the line smashes, mainly on the Indian's backhand. A couple of mish*ts from Sindhu also gave Mia some easy points.

For the second day, Sindhuโ€™s defence from the forecourt looked effective. Again, she did not opt for the toss-and-drop game and focused more on shorter returns, close to the net. Her trademark forehand flicks from the backcourt that twice caught Mia off-guard were a treat to watch.
