Shiv Kashi - Banaras - Varanasi काशीविश्वनाथ "Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together." - Mark Twain

Formerly known as Banaras and Kashi, the city of Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh is the oldest and most sacred city in India, and is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Hindu legend has it that Varanasi is the center of the universe, the first city created by the gods on Earth, and it is certainly true that it was already an old city when Rome was created. Varanasi has been the ca

ptial city of its region since roughly 650 B.C., but some sources state that it has existed as a city as far back as the A***n culture in the second millennium B.C. It is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata under many different names. It sits between two tributaries of the Ganges river, varuna and Asi, from which it takes its name. About 12 kilometres away is Sarnath, the first place where the Buddha preached, and both places receive huge amounts of tourists every year. It is said that if you die in Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges, you will attain instant liberation, or moksha. According to the Vedas, the Ganges bursts from Shiva’s head making this very spot the centre of the universe. The city’s ancient name is Kashi, meaning centre of cosmic rays, and the former name Banaras roughly translates as ‘readymade heaven’. (The new title Varanasi simply comes from the Varana and Assi rivers that join the Ganges here.) The following sanskrit sloka describes about the 12 Jyotirlingas -

On the sacred soil of Kashi, a 19-year-old boy has achieved something so rare, so extraordinary, that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi couldn’t stop himself from praising him. Vedamurti Devavrat Mahesh Rekhe from Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar), Maharashtra, has created history by completing the ancient and extremely difficult Dandakrama Parayan of the Shukla Yajurveda’s Madhyandini branch — a feat that has happened only three times in 200 years.

This ritual is considered the “crown” of Vedic recitation because of its complexity: nearly 2000 mantras, arranged in a special sequence, recited flawlessly with intricate pitch variations, phonetic changes, and strict rhythm — where even a single mistake can invalidate the entire Parayan. And yet, this young scholar completed it without a break, without an error, and in the shortest time and youngest age in history.

From 2 October to 30 November 2025, Devavrat performed this sacred Parayan continuously for 50 days at the renowned Vallabharam Shaligram Sangved Vidyalaya in Varanasi. The dedication, purity, discipline, and spiritual depth required for such an accomplishment is beyond imagination — something only the most gifted and disciplined Vedic scholars attempt.

The last time this rare ritual was completed successfully was over 200 years ago by Vedamurti Narayan Shastri Dev from Nashik. That is how rare, how historic, and how spiritually powerful this moment is.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself shared his admiration, writing:
“The achievement of 19-year-old Vedamurti Devavrat Mahesh Rekhe will be remembered for generations! Completing the Dandakrama Parayan of 2000 mantras of the Shukla Yajurveda without interruption over 50 days is a matter of pride for every Indian who loves our culture.”

A teenager has revived a centuries-old tradition, set a new record in the Vedic world, and reminded India that its spiritual heritage lives on through the brilliance of its young minds.

A moment of pride for Kashi.
A moment of pride for Maharashtra.
A moment of pride for India.
