Shri Raghupraveera Teertha: Saint, Scholar and Exemplar of Krishna Bhakti - Today is his Aradhane

Shri Raghupraveera Teertha, the twenty-fourth pontiff of the Hrishikesha Teertha Peetham of Palimaru Matha, occupies a revered place in the history of the Udupi Ashta Mathas. A distinguished scholar of Vedanta and Nyaya, he undertook extensive pilgrimages, engaged in scriptural debates with eminent scholars, and attained mastery over the principal works of Madhwa Siddhanta. His spiritual accomplishments included completing Shrimannyayasudha Mangala and Tatparya Chandrika Mangala twelve times each, reflecting his extraordinary dedication to learning and devotion.

Tradition records that during a forty-eight-day observance of Sundarakanda parayana at Ghatikachala, he received the special grace of Shri Mukhyaprana. Thereafter, his speech acquired remarkable clarity and eloquence, and he was divinely guided to retrieve and consecrate a sacred idol of Shri Mukhyaprana at Palimaru Moola Matha, where it continues to be worshipped.

Several miracles are associated with Shri Raghupraveera Teertha, including the famous episode in which he humbled a boastful acrobat who sought to mock sacred tradition and later transformed him through compassion and forgiveness. Such incidents established his reputation as a saint endowed with profound spiritual insight and divine grace.

Narmadha, the Sacred Cow and the Saint's Krishna Bhakti:

Among the many traditions associated with Shri Raghupraveera Teertha, none captures his devotion to Lord Krishna more vividly than the story of Narmadha, a cow specially dedicated to the service of Shri Krishna during his Paryaya.

Narmadha's milk was reserved exclusively for the abhisheka of Lord Krishna, and the saint regarded her as a cherished servant of the Lord. When she failed to return from grazing one evening, a thorough search was undertaken. The following day, it was discovered that she had fallen prey to a tiger in the nearby forests.

Deeply moved by the loss of a cow dedicated to Krishna's worship, Shri Raghupraveera Teertha entered profound meditation. Soon thereafter, an extraordinary event unfolded. The very tiger responsible for Narmadha's death appeared at the entrance of Shri Krishna Matha, trembling before collapsing and dying near the sacred precincts.

Devotees saw this as a manifestation of the saint's intense Krishna Bhakti and spiritual power. The tiger was subdued not by physical force but through the divine will invoked by a saint wholly devoted to the service of Lord Krishna. This remarkable episode earned him the enduring title "Pili Kerthna Swamilu" (the Pontiff Who Vanquished the Tiger). Even today, a tiger sculpture near his Brindavana at Shri Krishna Matha stands as a reminder of this celebrated event.

Shri Raghupraveera Teertha also enriched the devotional heritage of the Dvaita tradition through works such as the Avatara Traya Shata Nama Stotra. His Brindavana at Shri Krishna Matha, Udupi, continues to be a place of reverence for devotees.

His Aradhana is observed on Shravana Krishna Dwitiya, a sacred day that also marks the Aradhana of Shri Raghavendra Gurusarvabhouma, thereby linking the remembrance of two of the most revered luminaries of the Madhwa tradition. Through his scholarship, devotion, miracles, and service to Lord Krishna, Shri Raghupraveera Teertha continues to inspire generations of devotees and seekers.

Śāstrasīrān tapovīrān kathādhīrān trayīkarān
Raghupraveerān vande'haṁ goghna vyāghramṛtīśvarān

I bow to Shri Raghupraveera Teertha, the master of scriptures, the warrior of penance, the eloquent storyteller of sacred lore, and the seer who conquered both a recalcitrant acrobat and a fearsome tiger.
