Resurrection Sunday
APRIL 9, 2023

“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” -Matthew 28:6

On Resurrection Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead, fulfilling the prophecy.“Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.” -John 20:1

Two men, angels, appear to the women to tell them Jesus has risen (Matthew 28:2-7; Mark 16:4-7; Luke 24:2-7). The women, both afraid and joyful, remained first silent, and then quickly found the eleven disciples. Mary ran ahead to tell Peter and John, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him” (John 20:2). Jesus met the other women on their way!

“And behold, Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.” -Matthew 28:9-10

After all eleven have been informed, they rush to the empty tomb. Jesus appeared to Cleopas and another on the road to Emmaus, and to Peter. That evening, He entered a room with locked doors to greet the other ten disciples.“Peace to you!” (Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-23)

Today, we commemorate Good Friday, a solemn day for Christians around the world. Good Friday is celebrated in memory of Christ’s Passion, crucifixion, and death. The most important Good Friday symbol is the crucifix, or cross, which represents the way in which Jesus died.

Jesus willingly suffered on the cross for our sins, offering us the gift of salvation and eternal life. He died on the cross and was buried in a tomb, but on the third day, He rose again, triumphing over death and showing us the power of God's love.

He had been whipped and pierced and lashed. He endured several instruments of torture. He was tired, hungry and thirsty. All the people around him spat at him, abused him and rejected him. Yet he did not give up hope, he prayed to God and bore the pain to save us sinners, to give us eternal life and redemption from our worldly way of life.

Through his death he fulfilled his Father’s words, the prophets’ words and gave us hope in meeting him and his Father in heaven.
As we reflect on the significance of Good Friday, let us be reminded of the importance of sacrifice, compassion, and forgiveness. May we continue to follow the example of Jesus Christ and strive to live a life of love and service to others.

Let us take a moment to pray for those who are suffering and in need, and may we be a source of hope and comfort to those around us.

Wishing you all a meaningful and reflective Good Friday.

Maundy Thursday: Passover and Last Supper

APRIL 6, 2023

Maundy Thursday gives us a beautiful reminder that even during challenging times of betrayal and hardship, forgiveness and love have the power to overcome everything. On Holy or Maundy, Thursday, in an upper room, Jesus and His disciples shared the Last Supper. On this day, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples and broke the break with them for the last time. Still celebrated today as congregational traditions, the bread broken and the wine shared represented the body and blood of Christ, to be broken and shed for the disciples, and all of us. During the meal, Jesus predicted His betrayal by one of them and Peter’s denial.

Maundy, from the Latin root madam, means "commandment" or "mandate." On that Thursday Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment, which is why we use the term Maundy today. The word in this context is used by Jesus after He washes the feet of His friends.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.” -John 13:34

As we honor this day, let's remind ourselves to love others just as he loved us. Let's spread warmth and care to everyone around us, just like Jesus did. No one knew love like the sacrificial and selfless love of Jesus before the cross. Thus, a new commandment to love sacrificially and selflessly.

Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.

Palm Sunday is the day we remember and celebrate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem as Savior and King. As Jesus rode a donkey into the town of Jerusalem, a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road, giving Jesus royal treatment. The hundreds of people shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!".

In modern times, churches hold Palm Sunday services in which worshippers are given a palm branch or cross made from palm leaves. Palm branches are widely recognized symbols of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is a reminder of the selfless love Jesus showed by laying down his life for us, and it is a time to reflect on our own lives and how we can show that same love to those around us.
