Maha Puja - 09-06-2026
Mahapuja commemorates the moksha of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi's mother, Alagamma. This significant event took place at Skandasramam on May 19, 1922. In the very room where his mother attained moksha, Bhagavan sat with her for many hours, her head on his lap, his hands on her head and heart, preparing her for the final liberation. Through his profound spiritual presence and guidance, Bhagavan ensured that his mother attained moksha.
After her passing, when someone mentioned the death of his mother, Bhagavan gently corrected them, saying, "No, not passed away, absorbed." This profound moment marked a pivotal point in the spiritual life of the ashram and led to the establishment of the Ramana Ashram itself.
As we commemorate this event, we recognize that we are now more than 100 years beyond that transformative moment. This year, the Mahapuja is celebrated with even greater reverence and devotion, reflecting on a century of spiritual legacy and divine grace.
Following Alagamma's moksha, a lingam was installed on her Samadhi, and regular Puja to the Matrubhuteswara Linga commenced. It was the revered scholar Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni who named the linga Matrubhuteswara. Additionally, the Sri Chakra Puja, a highly significant ritual, was initiated after the installation of the Meru in this shrine. This Puja is performed six days a month, adding to the spiritual vibrancy of the ashram.
The Mahapuja is celebrated annually in the summer, specifically on the ninth day of the dark half of the solar month Vaikasi (May/June), known as Vaishaka Bahula Navami. This year, the event falls on June 9. On the morning of June 9, 2026, the grand Rudram Puja Abhishekam was performed in the mother’s shrine with great splendor. This was followed by the special decoration of the lingam and various anointing ceremonies. Devotional songs filled the air, and the ceremony concluded with deeparadhana (worship with light) around 10:15 am. Nearly a thousand devotees attended the event physically, partaking in a festive feast arranged for the occasion. Additionally, the live telecast of the event was watched by more than five thousand people worldwide (https://www.youtube.com/SriRamanasramam/live).
On the auspicious occasion of Maha Pooja, a complete recitation (Mutrothal) of Thiruvasagam was held at the shrines of Bhagavan and the Divine Mother. A large gathering of devotees participated and chanted the sacred verses with deep devotion.
The Mahapuja is not only a time to honor the memory and moksha of Alagamma but also a celebration of the continued spiritual guidance and blessings that emanate from Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and his mother. May the grace of the Mother bless us all abundantly.
