About Lord Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy
According to traditional temple lore, the story of Lord Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy begins with Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathy, and a devoted young woman named Koolivaka.
The tradition narrates that while Lord Shiva was in the forest of Koolikkunnu, he encountered Koolivaka. Through the divine intervention of Goddess Parvathy, a child possessing the combined blessings and powers of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy was born. Another sacred root placed on the riverbank is believed to have given rise to many Chathan beings.
The child born to Koolivaka later became known as Kuttichathan because of his youthful appearance. When he was seven years old, he journeyed to Kailasa to meet Lord Shiva. To enter Kailasa, he assumed the form of Lord Mahavishnu using his divine Maya Sakthi. Pleased by this act and the divine purpose behind it, Lord Shiva named him Vishnumaya.
Lord Shiva blessed Vishnumaya with the responsibility of protecting the weak, upholding righteousness, and helping devotees who sincerely sought divine guidance. Goddess Parvathy presented him with sacred weapons symbolizing the strength to overcome injustice and protect devotees from difficulties.
According to the tradition of Karuvannur Karanayil Devasthanam, around 400 years ago, Lord Shiva appeared before the ancestors of the Karanayil family while they were bathing in the river. Recognizing their deep devotion, he entrusted Lord Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy to them and instructed them to worship Him using sacred ancestral mantras. Since then, the Karanayil family has continued this traditional worship through successive generations.
