He wrote “Don’t Stop Believin’.” But his greatest journey was learning who to believe in. ✝️
Jonathan Cain, the longtime keyboardist and songwriter of Journey, helped create some of rock music’s most recognizable songs, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms.”
But his story began long before the fame.
At just 8 years old, Jonathan survived the devastating 1958 fire at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago. 92 children and 3 nuns died. The tragedy deeply shook his faith, and he wrestled with the question, “Where was Jesus?”
His father encouraged him to keep going and gave him music. Jonathan later described music as a source of healing, saying that out of the ashes, something new could be born.
Years later, music took him to Journey, worldwide fame, and songs that became part of generations.
But his story didn't end on the biggest stages.
His faith was renewed, and he began creating Christian music. His album What God Wants to Hear became, in his words, an offering back to God.
His story is a reminder:
Your pain doesn't have to be the end of your story.
Your gift can become your testimony.
And your platform can point people to Jesus.
