According to an opinion in the school of Imam Shafi'i, salah/prayer is invalid without sending salutations upon the Prophet and his family. Whilst we are in the most intimate conversations with our Lord, He still deems it unacceptable without the remembrance of His beloved. عليه الصلاة و السلام

Book 031, Number 6177: (Sahih Muslim)
Abu Huraira reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: If the din were at the Pleiades, "EVEN THEN A PERSON FROM PERSIA" would have taken hold of it, or one amongst the Persian descent would have surely found it.
Imam Jalal ud-din as-Suyuti (rah) who is renowned to be Mujaddad of 9th century said of this hadith:

اقول: وقد بشر بالإمام ابي حنيفة فى الحديث

Translation: I say this hadith has Basharah (glad tiding) for Imam Abu Hanifa (Rahimahullah)
