इंद्र के प्रकोप से ब्रजवासियों को बचाने के लिए भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत उठाया था तब उन्हें लगातार सात दिन भूखा रहना पड़ा था। इसके बाद उन्हें सात दिनों और आठ पहर के हिसाब से 56 व्यंजन खिलाए गए थे। माना जाता है तभी से ये '56 भोग' परम्परा की शुरुआत हुई।
