امام سفیان ثوری رحمہ اللہ فرماتے ہیں:

"علماء جب علم حاصل کرتے ہیں تو عمل کرتے ہیں، جب عمل کرتے ہیں تو (عبادت و دین داری میں) مشغول ہو جاتے ہیں، جب مشغول ہو جاتے ہیں تو (دنیا والوں کی نگاہوں سے) غائب ہو جاتے ہیں، جب وہ غائب ہو جاتے ہیں تو لوگ انہیں تلاش کرتے ہیں، اور جب لوگ انہیں تلاش کرتے ہیں تو وہ (ریا و شہرت کے خوف سے) بھاگ نکلتے ہیں۔"
