here is the history and significance of the Sufi saint HAZRATH *SYED SHAH PEERUL HADHI QADRI SHUTTARI* Salem sanyasi kundu Dongri Dargah Sharif. also known as Sher-Sawar Rahmathullahi Alayh.
Life and Origins
Background: He was originally from Arabia and first arrived in India at the Malabar or Kerala coast.
Arrival in Salem: He traveled from the coast and reached Salem in approximately 1267 Hijri (1850 AD).
Demise: He passed away in 1306 Hijri (1888 AD).
Commemoration: His Urs (death anniversary festival) is observed annually on 17 Shaban.
The Legend of "Sher-Sawar"
The name Sher-Sawar translates to "Lion-Rider." According to local tradition in Salem:
A lion would always guard the doorstep of his home.
The lion would provide him with rides whenever he needed to travel.
Shrine Location (Sanyasi Goondu)
Location: His shrine is situated on a small hill called Dongri, located about 5 miles from Salem.
Local Name: Residents call the site Sanyasi Goondu, which translates to "an ascetic's nest."
Environment: The area is known for its lush green flora and foliage, making it a popular spot for tourists.
