Sri Krishna Janmashtami
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth Divine Incarnation. It falls on the 8th day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). This is one of the greatest of all Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna was born at midnight. A twenty-four hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight.
Incarnations of God appear for special reasons under special circumstances. Whenever there is much unrighteousness, whenever confusion and disorder set in on account of unrighteousness and baffle the well-ordered progress of mankind, whenever the balance of human society is upset by selfish, ruthless and cruel beings, whenever irreligion and unrighteousness prevail, whenever the foundations of social organisations are undermined, the great Incarnation of God appears in order to re-establish righteousness and to restore peace.
An Incarnation is the descent of God for the ascent of man. A ray from the Cosmic Being in His potential state of manifestation descends on earth with mighty powers to keep up the harmony of the universe. The work done by the Incarnation of God and His teachings produce a benign influence on human beings and help them in their upward divine unfoldment and Self-realisation.
The Incarnation comes to reveal the divine nature of man and makes him rise above the petty materialistic life of passion and egoism.
The Incarnations usually come with their particular or favourite groups or companions. Lord Rama came with Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna. Lord Krishna came with Balarama, Devas and Rishis. Sanaka came with Sanandana, Sanatkumara and Sanatsujata. Some, like Sri Shankara and Ramanuja, come as teachers and spiritual leaders. Some, like Chaitanya, are born to instill devotion in the hearts of people and turn their minds towards God. The Incarnations proper, like Krishna, come only when there is widespread catastrophe in the world.

May the blessings of Lord Krishna and Sri Radha be upon you all!

Great teachers never belong to the past. They belong to the present as well as to the future. They are ever present. The guru is never absent. He is never removed. He is always immediate, both in space as well as in time. He is even more immediate in Consciousness that does not relate either to space or to time. He is always there. You are always in It, and It is always within you. It is something that does not need the support of space or time.

Therefore, cultivate the consciousness of the permanent and perennial presence of the guru: β€œHe pervades all my life. He prevails throughout my being and throughout the living of my life. He always prevails. He is with me morning, afternoon, evening and night. He is with me wherever I go, not merely when I go to his temple or his samadhi. I am myself a living temple of his presence, and in and through me he continues to live and to shine. He draws me in the right direction from without, and he urges me in the right direction from within.”

This, indeed, is the key to true discipleship and to a successful spiritual life. This is the way to obtain the highest and the maximum benefit from that being we call the spiritual master or the guru. This is the inner spiritual truth about the subtle and unparalleled relationship of a sincere seeking soul and the guru that is sent in order to put the individual soul into contact with the great, eternal, infinite and all-perfect Universal Soul that is at once our origin, our destination and our destiny as well.

Pray to the Almighty Lord for help and guidance. Thirst for His grace. Place your trust in Him. Do not be moved by difficulties. Difficulties strengthen your will and augment your power of endurance and turn your mind towards God. He will guide you in all your activities.

Each temptation, each trial is a test by God to find out your strength of will, your faith, power of endurance, the degree of dispassion. Stand adamant. Be bold. Be cheerful. Be courageous. Be very active inwardly but not noisy. Grow silently and get firmly established in your real, divine nature.

When you chant Om, do not think that you are making a sound through your mouth. It is your original source rising to the surface of your personality. We do not create the vibration; the vibration creates us.

5. THE MANTRA AND ITS MEANING

Q. If we do Japa of a Mantra without understanding its meaning, or in a hurry, will it have any bad reaction on the person who does?

A. It cannot have any bad reaction but the spiritual progress will be slow when the Mantra is repeated in a hurry-burry without Bhava or faith. Even when any Mantra is repeated unconsciously or hurriedly without Bhava, without understanding its meaning, it undoubtedly produces beneficial results, just as fire burns inflammable objects when they are brought near.

6. EXPERIENCES IN MANTRA SADHANA

Q. What are the sings that indicate that the Mantra is really benefitting the Sadhaka?

A. The Sadhaka who practises Mantra-Yoga will feel the Presence of the Lord at all times. He will feel the Divine ecstasy and holy thrill in the heart. He will possess all Divine qualities. He will have a pure mind and a pure heart. He will feel horripilation. He will shed tears of Prem. He will have holy communion with the Lord.

There is only one Cast- The Caste of HUMANITY. There is only one Religion- The Religion of LOVE. There is only one Commandment- The Commandment of TRUTHFULNESS. There is only one Law- The Law of CAUSE and EFFECT. There is only one God - The Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient Lord. There is only one Language- The Language of HEART or the Language of SILENCE.
