The Human Intellect and Its Proper Place in Vedānta
Vedānta (वेदान्त) respects Manuṣya Buddhi (मनुष्य बुद्धि, human intellect) as a valuable instrument of inquiry, discrimination, and understanding. Yet it also recognises that the intellect has definite limitations.
First, it is Alpa (अल्प, finite). At any moment, it can comprehend only a small part of the vast and interconnected order of existence. Its knowledge is always partial.
Second, the intellect is subjective. Memory, upbringing, past experiences, likes, dislikes, fears, and desires influence its conclusions. Therefore, what appears to be objective reasoning may still be colored by personal conditioning.
Third, the intellect functions within the Maryādā (मर्यादा, boundary) of Prakṛti (प्रकृति, nature). It operates through time, space, causation, change, and the three Guṇāḥ (गुणाः). For this reason, it cannot independently discover Ātmā (आत्मा, Self) or Brahman (ब्रह्मन्, limitless reality), which is not an object available for observation or intellectual construction.
Vedānta therefore neither rejects nor glorifies the intellect. Through preparation, reflection, and discipline, Buddhi (बुद्धि, intellect) is refined and steadied. Guided by Śruti (श्रुति, revealed scripture) and a qualified Ācārya (आचार्य, traditional teacher), it becomes a clear instrument for recognizing the truth rather than claiming to be independent source.
