The newly elected Pope is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV. He is the first American to be elected Pope. The announcement of his election was made with the phrase "Habemus Papam," which means "We have a Pope".

Mark 16 : 15 - 20

He said to them, “ Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe : In my name they will drive out demons ; they will speak in new tongues ; they will pick up snakes with their hands ; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all ; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. ”

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

John 12 : 44 - 50

Then Jesus cried out, “ Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

“ If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words ; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say. ”

যোহন ১২ : ৪৪ - ৫০

অথচ যীশু কিন্তু জোর দিয়ে তখন এই কথা বলেছিলেন : " যে আমার ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখে, আসলে সে তো আমার ওপর নয়, বরং যিনি আমাকে পাঠিয়েছেন, তাঁরই ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখে । আর যে আমাকে দেখতে পায়, সে তো তাঁকেই দেখতে পায়, যিনি আমাকে পাঠিয়েছেন । আমি জগতের আলো হয়েই এই জগতে এসেছি, যাতে আমার প্রতি বিশ্বাসী কোন মানুষকেই আর অন্ধকারে থাকতে না হয় । কেউ যদি আমার কথা শুনেও তা মেনে না চলে, তাহলে আমি নিজে তার বিচার করি না ; কারণ আমি তো জগতের বিচার করতে আসিনি, এসেছি জগৎকে পরিত্রাণ করতে । যে আমাকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করে ও আমার কথা মেনে নেয় না, তার জন্যে অবশ্য এক বিচারক আছে : আমি যে-বাণী শুনিয়েছি, শেষ দিনে সেই বাণীই হবে তার বিচারক । কারণ আমি নিজে থেকে তো কিছু বলিনি ; বরং আমার পিতা, যিনি আমাকে পাঠিয়েছেন, তিনি নিজেই আমাকে আদেশ দিয়ে ব'লে দিয়েছেন, আমি কী বলব, কোন বাণীই বা শোনাব । আর আমি জানি, তাঁর সেই যে-আদেশ, তার মধ্যে নিহিত আছে শাশ্বত জীবন । তাই আমি যা-কিছু বলি, পিতার কথামতোই তা বলি । "

যোহন ৬ : ৩০ - ৩৫

তখন তারা বলল: " কিন্তু আপনি অলৌকিক কীই-বা এমন-কিছু নিদর্শন দেখাতে পারেন, যা দেখে আমরা আপনাকে বিশ্বাস করতে পারব ? তেমন কী কাজই বা করতে পারেন ? আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষেরা তো মরুভূমিতে মান্না খেয়েছিলেন-শাস্ত্রে যেমনটি লেখা আছে : ' তিনি তাদের খেতে দিলেন স্বর্গের রুটি '। ”

যীশু উত্তর দিলেন : " আমি তোমাদের সত্যি-সত্যিই বলছি, মোশী কিন্তু স্বর্গের সেই রুটি তোমাদের দেননি; আমার পিতাই এখন স্বর্গের সেই রুটি, সেই সত্যিকার রুটি তোমাদের দান করছেন । কারণ যে রুটি স্বর্গ থেকে নেমে আসে আর এই জগতের মানুষকে সঞ্জীবিত করে, সেই তো ঈশ্বরের দেওয়া রুটি । ”

তারা তখন তাঁকে বলল : " প্রভু, আপনি তাহলে সর্বদা আমাদের সেই রুটিই দান করুন ! "

যীশু উত্তর দিলেন : " আমিই সেই জীবন-রুটি । যে আমার কাছে আসে, সে কখনো ক্ষুধার্ত হবে না; আমাকে যে বিশ্বাস করে, সে কখনো তৃষ্ণার্ত হবে না ।
