🚩 CHANDAN YATRA – THE DIVINE SANDALWOOD FESTIVAL OF LORD JAGANNATH 🌿🛶
Every great journey begins with a sacred preparation.
Long before the magnificent chariots roll through the streets of Puri during the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, another beautiful festival marks the beginning of this divine journey—Chandan Yatra, the sacred Festival of Sandalwood Paste.
Rich in devotion, tradition, and spiritual symbolism, Chandan Yatra is one of the most graceful celebrations in the Jagannath tradition and signifies the commencement of the annual Rath Yatra preparations.
🙏 The Beginning of a Divine Journey
The sacred festival begins on Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.
This day is considered a symbol of new beginnings, prosperity, and eternal blessings.
It is on this holy occasion that:
🪵 The construction of the magnificent chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra officially begins.
🔥 A sacred fire ritual (Yajna) is performed seeking divine blessings for the construction of the three grand Rathas.
🌾 Across India, farmers begin ploughing their fields, welcoming a new agricultural season filled with hope and abundance.
Thus, Akshaya Tritiya beautifully connects faith, nature, and human life into one sacred celebration.
🌿 What is Chandan Yatra?
As the summer heat rises, the Lords are lovingly worshipped with fragrant sandalwood paste (Chandan), cooling herbs, flowers, and sacred rituals.
For 21 divine days, the representative deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are taken out in colourful processions through the streets of Puri.
Every evening, these sacred idols enjoy a ceremonial boat ride across the beautiful Narendra Tank, creating one of the most peaceful and enchanting spectacles in Odisha.
The shimmering waters, devotional music, temple rituals, and illuminated boats create an atmosphere that feels truly heavenly.
🛶 A Festival That Unites Traditions
One of the most fascinating aspects of Chandan Yatra is its message of unity and harmony.
The representative forms of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra are joined by the presiding deities of five ancient Shiva temples of Puri, affectionately known as the Pancha Pandavas.
This remarkable tradition beautifully reflects the inclusive spirit of Lord Jagannath, where different forms of worship come together in devotion.
It is a living example of India’s timeless spiritual philosophy—many paths, one Divine.
🌸 The Sacred Boat Festival
After the divine boat ride, the deities are ceremonially bathed in a beautiful shrine situated in the middle of Narendra Tank.
Stone tubs are filled with:
🌿 Fragrant sandalwood paste
🌺 Fresh flowers
💧 Sacred water
🌼 Aromatic herbs and natural perfumes
These rituals symbolize purity, peace, and the loving care offered to the Lord by His devotees.
🚩 Snana Yatra – The Grand Bathing Festival
The conclusion of Chandan Yatra leads to another significant celebration—Snana Yatra, held on the full moon day of the month of Jyeshtha.
On this auspicious day:
💦 Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra, and Sudarshana are ceremonially bathed with 108 sacred pots of water drawn from the revered Suna Kua (Golden Well) inside the temple.
Following the holy bath, the deities appear in the magnificent Hati Besha (Elephant Attire), a rare and deeply cherished darshan that attracts thousands of devotees.
🌿 The Secret Period – Anasara
After the grand bathing ceremony, tradition believes that the deities develop a symbolic fever due to the ceremonial bath.
For nearly 15 days, the Lords remain away from public view in a sacred period known as Anasara.
During this time:
🍃 The deities are offered simple herbal medicines, roots, fruits, berries, and leaves as part of their ritual healing.
🎨 Instead of the original idols, devotees receive darshan of the beautifully hand-painted Anasara Pattis, traditional Pattachitra paintings that preserve the continuity of worship until the Lords recover.
This unique tradition reflects the deeply human and compassionate relationship devotees share with Lord Jagannath—where the Divine is cared for just like a beloved family member.
🙏 The Sacred Role of the Daitapatis
Throughout the Anasara period and the entire Rath Yatra, the exclusive service of the Lords is performed by the Daitapati Sevayats, descendants of the legendary tribal devotee Biswabasu.
Their hereditary service preserves one of the oldest living traditions of the Jagannath culture, symbolizing the beautiful harmony between tribal heritage and Vedic worship.
