Time changes, generations pass, but the rhythm of the Ratha Khala remains eternal.

The Chaka Dera (or Chaka-Akha Dera) ritual is one of the most critical and sacred milestones in the construction of the three grand Rath for the annual Rath Jatra in Puri.

Literally translating to the "fixing of the wheels," this ritual marks the exact phase where the construction transitions from individual woodwork components to building the actual structure of the chariots. It involves symbolically joining the first set of massive wooden wheels (Chaka) to the principal axles (Akha).

The ritual takes place on Bhaunri Jatra, which marks the 20th-day of Bahara Chandan Jatra (the outdoor water-sport festival of the deities). It serves as the bridge between the summer water rituals and the high-intensity Rath construction phase.

The entire process is executed amid an intense atmosphere filled with the rhythmic sounds of gongs, the blowing of conch shells, and thousands of devotees chanting "Jai Jagannath" and "Hari Bol".

This beautiful timeline captures the timeless essence of the Seva towards Mahaprabhu

2008: The heavy wooden wheels receiving the sacred Agyan Mala (garland of divine consent).

2013: Hands weathered with skill and devotion, continuing an unbroken lineage of craftsmanship.

2026: Generation after generation, surrounded by the sea of devotees, the tradition breathes with the exact same fervor today.

This is to inform every devotee visiting Shree Jagannatha Temple on 20th May 2026 that the Darshan of Mahaprabhu will remain closed from 6pm onwards till 10 pm for Banaka lagi ritual .
