About the Community

The Poona Bene Israeli Jewish community traces back to Subhedar Abraham David Charrikar of the 3rd Regiment, Bombay Native Infantry, as Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1863. The Bene Israeli community was primarily based in Rasta Peth, Nana Peth, Bhavani Peth, Somwar Peth, and the Camp areas. Historically Pune had four prayer halls; “Pune Bene Israeli Prayer Hall”, "Hebr

ath Beth Yacob Prayer Hall”, “Jhiradkar Prayer Hall”, and “Ghosalkar” prayer hall. The present Succath Shelomo Synagogue stands in place of the Jhiradkar Prayer Hall. About the Succath Shelomo Synagogue

Several congregations came together in 1915 to build the Succath Shelomo Synagogue. For the construction of the Synagogue, the Jhiradkar Prayer Hall, which had been in use since the 1870s, was selected. The property was acquired in 1916, and initial steps were taken in 1919 for constructing the Synagogue. The foundation stone was laid on the 28th of December 1919. The Synagogue was inaugurated on the 21st of May 1921.
