March 29
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

The readings today give us a lesson in humility, which is not about having a low self-esteem; rather realizing one’s complete dependence on God.

In the first reading, Isaiah practices humility as God wants Him to, knowing that God will not let him be disgraced. The second reading too tells us about humility. Jesus humbled Himself even though He is God. In the Gospel, Jesus rode on a donkey instead of a horse – also a sign of humility.

Jesus, in the Gospel, was welcomed with palm branches, which is a symbol of peace and victory. The King of glory comes in peace, His death and resurrection bring victory and those who walk the way of the Lord are called to do so in humility.

Today, let the palm leaves that we take home remind us to serve love and walk in humility, as the Lord did.

31st March, 2024 - EASTER SUNDAY

“Did Jesus actually rise from the dead?” As Catholics, our faith depends on our answer to this all important question.

Ten of the eleven apostles (minus Judas), died a martyr’s death for teaching the Good News that Jesus proclaimed. Why would these men who deserted Jesus when He was arrested, now give up their very lives to a witness to Christ’s resurrection? Besides, if the Gospel writers really wanted to prevent all attempts to disprove the resurrection, they would not have spoken of women as being the first witnesses to the resurrection, definitely not in a society that did not even accept the testimony of women in a court of law.

So what does the resurrection mean for us? It is a testimony of God’s faithfulness to His covenant. It is proof that eventually truth & justice prevail over deception and injustice; that non-violence prevails over violence; that love triumphs over hate, good over evil. It tells us that life does not end with death but changes into something new and beautiful and this assurance of eternal life gives meaning and purpose to our earthly existence.

29th March 2024
Good Friday

Today’s Passion Narrative from the Gospel according to John makes it clear that the suffering and death of Jesus was because the power-hungry authorities of his time saw Jesus as a threat to their selfish motives and politically strategized to have Him removed.

Jesus realized that by speaking out against the unjust structures of his time (i.e. by strongly condemning the corrupt religious practices, by working to uplift the poor, the sinners, the outcasts, the marginalised) He would have to suffer. But He also knew that his suffering and death would inspire many more to take up this cause after him.

Innocent people suffer even today, not because God wills it, but because of selfish and power-hungry human beings. That millions of poor die because they have nothing to eat, that thousands are murdered in riots and bomb blasts, that hundreds of foetuses are aborted every day is certainly not the will of God. Rather it is a challenge to those who have eyes and ears and hands and feet to do something about it.

28th March
Maundy Thursday

The name, Maundy Thursday, comes from the Latin phrase, novum mandatum, which means ‘new command’ and refers to the words of Jesus to his Apostles: “A new command I give you, love one another as I have loved you”.

It was on this day that the Eucharist we celebrate today was instituted, when Jesus celebrated the first Eucharist at His Last Supper. Washing the feet of His Apostles, Jesus set an example of servant leadership to these men who He had chosen to become the first ministers of His Church – which is why today, we also celebrate the institution of the Priesthood.

Sharing with them His Body and Blood, Jesus revealed the depths of God’s love – a love unto death! His words: “do this in memory of me” are a call to each of us to live as He did – witnessing God’s love to the world by breaking ourselves in the service of others.

Wednesday of Holy Week

Even though Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, He did not refuse him as a disciple. Jesus kept him in charge of the group’s treasury and reserved a place at the table during the Last Supper. This shows us the tender and gentle way in which God deals with sinners. He never forces us to repent, but invites and encourages us to return to Him.

The first reading talks about the trials that we, Catholics, face for standing up for our faith. Have we ever considered the pain and suffering that Jesus went through? Not only on His way to Calvary but every time people lacked faith, rejected His teachings or despised Him. Jesus experienced that pain for you and me. Jesus, however, also understood that the temporal pain would be nothing compared to the beauty of heavenly victory – a victory that was meant for all of God’s people.

Perhaps we could spend a few moments recalling the times God has gently and lovingly dealt with us.

26th March
Tuesday of Holy Week

The readings of this Tuesday of Passion Week open with Isaiah who predicts the role of the Messiah. The 'Suffering Servant' had reason to despair, but he receives reassurance from God that not only will the tribes of Israel be restored but he will become “a light to the nations that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

The Gospel brings us to the table of the Last Supper and focuses on Jesus’ prophecies about Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial - implied is the treachery and unfaithfulness of the generations to come. But Jesus' Passion and Death goes beyond betrayal and denial; it reminds us of the triumph of the cross and therein the hope for all humanity. For it reveals to us that our God's great mercy, His unconditional love, is greater than any sin, any failing, any despair.

When we believe in this truth, we accept the invitation to participate in Christ's mission to be “a light to the nations” so that God's salvation may reach to all the earth.
