Guidance for Husband and Wife

Allah, the Exalted, has explained certain important principles regarding the intimate relationship between husband and wife:

1. Just as a farmer values his field as a precious possession and protects it from all harm, likewise a husband should regard his wife as a beloved and precious trust, safeguarding her and striving to fulfill her lawful needs and rights.

2. The marital relationship should not be based solely on pleasure or desire; rather, its fundamental purpose also includes the continuation of family through righteous offspring.

3. Intimacy is permitted only in the manner and within the limits prescribed by Islamic law. Seeking fulfillment in ways that go against the natural order and the boundaries set by the Shari‘ah is unlawful and forbidden.

(Surah al-Baqarah, 2:223)

Rulings of Fasting (Ṣawm)

Allah, the Exalted, has explained the obligation of fasting, its wisdom, and some essential rulings:

1. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. Allah has made fasting for the entire month of Ramadan obligatory upon every sane and mature Muslim man and woman. Whoever abandons it is considered a serious sinner.

2. Fasting was also prescribed for the previous nations.

3. The purpose of fasting is to develop taqwa (God-consciousness), piety, purification of the soul, and a strong spirit of worship and devotion to Allah.

4. A traveler according to Islamic law and a sick person are permitted not to fast, but they must make up (qada) for the missed fasts on other days.

5. The fidyah (compensation) for not fasting is feeding one poor person, approximately equivalent to 1.75 kg of wheat.

6. However, if a traveler or a sick person chooses to fast during Ramadan despite these concessions, then in terms of reward and virtue, it is better for them.

The Message Of The Qur'an

The True Essence of Righteousness

The Jews considered facing the west, and the Christians facing the east, during worship as a means of salvation. They did not regard faith in the Prophet ﷺ, along with righteous deeds and noble character, as essential for success.

Therefore, they were advised that merely turning one’s face toward the east or west is not sufficient. Rather, true righteousness consists of these essential and fundamental acts:

* To believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, all the divinely revealed books, and the prophets.
* Then, in accordance with the demands of faith and seeking the pleasure of Allah, to spend wealth on relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, and those who ask.
* To establish prayer (Ṣalāh) and give charity (Zakāh) consistently.
* To fulfill one’s promises and commitments.
* And to show patience and steadfastness in financial hardship, physical suffering, and in striving in the path of Allah against opposition.

Only by acting upon all these aspects of righteousness can a person truly become among the truthful and the righteous (Al-Muttaqūn).

(Surah al-Baqarah, 2:177)
