About the diocese:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Punalur (Latin: Dioecesis Punalurensis) is a diocese located in the city of Punalur in the Ecclesiastical province of Trivandrum in India. Punalur was bifurcated from the Diocese of Quilon and

created into a separate diocese by the Papal Bull โ€œVerba Chritiโ€(Word of Christ) of Pope John Paul II, issued on 21st December, 1985. Belgian Carmelite Fathers were the first missionaries in this area. During the Second World War the first missionaries had to go back, entrusting the missions to the Diocesan clergy. Mathias Kappil is the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Punalur and he was consecrated on 13th April 1986 and took the official charge of the diocese as a bishop on 16th May 1986. In 2005 Bishop Mathias Kappil retired and on 3rd May 2005 Rt. Dr. Joseph Kariyil was consecrated as the second Bishop of Punalur. He served the diocese for four years. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan was nominated as the third Bishop of Punalur to succeed Bishop Joseph Kariyil who was transferred to Cochin Diocese. Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan was consecrated on 28th June 2009. Punalur Diocese comprises of the civil district of Pathanamthitta and the parts of the districts of Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvanthapuram and the taluks of Chengannur, Kottarakara, Kozhencerry, Kunnathur, Mavelikara, Pathanapuram and Ranny.

Monthly Recollection for Priests and Religious at St. Xavierโ€™s Animation Centre, Pathanapuram.

The Monthly Recollection for Priests and Religious of the Diocese of Punalur was held at St. Xavierโ€™s Animation Centre, Pathanapuram, on 29 June 2026, from 10.30 a.m. to 1.45 p.m.

A good number of priests and religious working in the Diocese participated in the recollection.

The programme included the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, and a recollection talk.

The recollection talk was given by Rev. Fr. Berny Varghese OFM Cap.
During the gathering, Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan offered fraternal advice and encouraged the participants to reflect deeply on their vocation and ministry as priests and religious.

Msgr. Sebastian Vaz coordinated and organized the recollection programme in a systematic manner. Rev. Fr. Benedict Thekkuvila, Director of the Centre, made all necessary arrangements for the hall and lunch.

Rev. Fr. Jijo, Rev. Fr. Ajith K.C., and Rev. Fr. Vineeth shared the programmes of their ministry.

Rev. Fr. Colin also spoke about the negative influence of Emperor Emmanuel in some of our parishes.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Rev. Fr. Praveen, who expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the recollection.
