Varahi's Power Explained.
Why is varahi is so powerful

Varahi is a powerful goddess in Hinduism, particularly in the Shakta tradition. She is considered to be a fierce aspect of Devi (the Divine Mother) and is often depicted with the face of a pig and the body of a human.

There are several reasons why Varahi is considered to be so powerful:

Her association with the earth element: Varahi is often associated with the earth element, which is considered to be one of the most stable and powerful elements in nature. As such, she is often invoked for stability, grounding, and protection.

Her ferocity: Varahi is a fierce goddess, and her energy is said to be particularly powerful for destroying negative energies, obstacles, and enemies. Her ferocity is also believed to be protective, as she is said to fiercely defend her devotees.

Her association with the Muladhara Chakra: In the Hindu system of chakras, the Muladhara Chakra (root chakra) is located at the base of the spine and is associated with stability, grounding, and survival instincts. Varahi is often associated with this chakra and is believed to help activate it, bringing stability and strength to the individual.

Her association with Kali: Varahi is often considered to be an aspect of Kali, another powerful goddess in the Shakta tradition. As such, she is said to possess some of Kali's power and energy.

Overall, Varahi's power is believed to come from her association with the earth element, her ferocity, and her connection to the Muladhara Chakra and Kali.

The main shrine is built in the traditional pagoda style, with wood, bricks, and stone as the primary materials, and has a large enough premise to accommodate a significant number of devotees. The temple premises is large enough to fit a significant number of devotees and guests. Sailing to the island and exploring the temple are both highly recommended when visiting Phewa Lake.

Phewa Lake is Nepal's second-largest lake and one of the most popular tourist destinations. It is an abode for both domestic as well as international travellers! People who are into adventure trekking usually love Pokhara for the natural wonders it provides! Annapurna region is among the world’s most loved trekking regions, which usually starts with Pokhara! The backdrop of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna mountains reflects in this lake, adding to the stunning scenery. And, sure, it is lovelier than you've seen in photographs.

Tal Barahi Temple's courtyard resembles a little island. It is well-known among holidaymakers and tourists. The goings-on in the water does not affect the devotees' worship. The visitors can reach the temple via boat. Thousands of Pokhara residents visit Tal Barahi Temple during Durga Puja and on Saturdays to worship the Goddess. This temple is the only one of its sort in Nepal, as it is built entirely within a lake with no land passageways.

In Nepali, Barahi means 'Boar'. Goddess Durga assumed this shape to slay the harmful demons. With her tusks, she is believed to have fought and killed all of the evil demons. She is believed to have visited the Pokhara Valley after the conflict and found it so appealing that she wanted to dwell there. Since then, the Hindu population in Nepal has revered the formidable form of Goddess Durga as a significant divinity.

A Pujari does daily Puja using Puja Samagri (such as Dhup, Acheta, Abir, Phulpati, etc.). Since the Barahi is regarded as a goddess, goats, ducks, hens, and other animals are sacrificed in her honour, and pigeons are taught to fly. It's all done to please her. It is believed that by making Barahi happy, one might achieve his or her goals and dreams in life. Many marriages and Bratabandha ceremonies are performed at the temple of Barahi Devi after witnessing the Devi on auspicious days of different months such as November through July.

Both spiritualists and materialists should pay a visit to the Barahi temple. Spiritualists can satisfy their inner feelings and beliefs by praying to Devi, as well as observing Nepali culture, art, and architecture. The Tal Barahi Temple is not just a safe retreat for pilgrims, but also heritage lovers and nature lovers.

Legend of the Tal Barahi Temple
There was once a lovely city called Phewa, which is now drowned below Phewa Lake. One day, a very elderly woman who was unknown to anyone arrived out of nowhere and walked down the streets of this bustling city, knocking on doors and begging for food. The city's residents are unaware of the old woman's existence; she was a goddess who had assumed a human form. As the people of Kathmandu previously did for Gorakhnath, everyone turned their backs on her and shut the door in her face.

Finally, an elderly couple welcomed her to join their meal comprising boiled rice and veggies in one of the poor dwellings. Before departing his host, the old woman thanked them profusely. She devised a plot to assassinate nearly all of the city's opponents. She encouraged the elderly hosts to flee their homes as soon as possible and seek sanctuary on a nearby little hilltop. She forewarned them of a dreadful tragedy that was coming to ruin their city, and she threatened to exact vengeance on the city's inhabitants.
The couple took the old woman's instructions and began walking towards the Tal Barahi Temple hillock. When they reached the top of the hillock, they looked back and saw that a previous lake had inundated the town, killing practically all of the city's inhabitants. This is currently the Tal Barahi Temple's courtyard. The location where the couple saved their lives. Instead of the old woman, they saw Goddess Barahi. They constructed a modest temple dedicated to Goddess Barahi. Instead of a modest temple, Kaskeli King built the current temple in 1416.

People who explore Phewa Lake are quite familiar with a little island right in the middle of the lake. This island is home to the mighty Tal Barahi temple. Tal Barahi Temple is also known as ‘Lake Temple’ or 'Barahi Temple'. This is one of the must-visit sites in Pokhara and is also a very religious monument. The Tal Barahi temple resides in the middle of the colossal Phewa Lake in Pokhara.

The exterior of the Tal Barahi Temple includes a two-story pagoda structure with a Gajur on top. The Gajur is gilded with gold whereas the other structure is made of stones, and the temple has a thatched roof. Tal Barahi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga: Protector of Gods. The only way to visit this temple is by boat. The temple is a great place to relax and observe the holy rituals being carried out.

PANJURLI VARAHI

The cult of Panjurli appears to be as old as the beginning of agricultural phase of human civilization, probably it dates back to 3000 BC or older.
The cult of Panjurli appears to have been rejuvenated around 4th Century CE during the uprise of Kadamba regime. As you know, Sanskritization was the order of the day at that period. The age old Spirit of Panjurli became Varaha and was moulded as one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu!
Besides, the incidental information suggests that Panjurli was worshipped in female form during the Kadamba regime. It was known as Varahi. One of the rivers flowing in the Banavasi(Kadamba Kingdom)-to Kundapura region was named as Varahi! Further, it appears that the people began to worship Varahi as "Varah(i)ti" . The ti or thi suffix is indicative of female forms, as you know, from examples like gowdti, ullalti, etc.In due course, Varahti became Varti or Varte!
So there were two forms(avtars) for the same cult! There were people who worshipped both the forms together.
This has lead to the confusion of relationships between the two forms. Some people think that Panjurli and Varthe area brother and sister while others argue that they are husband and wife. It can be opined that this can resolved by considering that Panjurli and Varthe are the two forms of a single populations.

BHOOTA KOOLA IN PANJURULI

Būta Kōlā,also referred to as daiva kōlā or nēmā, is an animistic ritual dance performance prevalent among Hindus of Tulu Nadu and parts of Malenadu of Karnataka and Kasargod in northern Kerala, India. The dance is highly stylized and held in honor of the local deities worshiped by the Tulu speaking population. It has influenced Yakshagana folk theatre. Būta kōlā is closely related to Theyyam of neighbouring Malayalam-speaking populations.

The ancient Tulu oral literature, Goddess Parvati kept an offspring of a Wild boar as her pet and loved it dearly. It was very naughty and destroyed the gardens in Kailash. Lord Shiva angered by this, killed the Wild Boar. This upset Parvati greatly. To pacify her, Shiva brought it back to life as a spirit and sent it to Earth to protect the people and steer them from evil to good.

Bhuta Worship in the form of Bhuta Kola is celebrated in the Tululand (states of Southern coastal Karnataka like Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapura) and North Malabar region of Kerala and is very much a core part of the socio-cultural life in the village. Some believe the origin of Bhuta worship to be older than Hinduism itself. A Bhuta is a divine ethereal spirit that is believed to protect and promote the welfare of its worshippers. The Bhuta kola attempts to bring together the tangible and the intangible worlds. There are at least 350 kinds of Bhutas which are classified either as those of totemic origin or derived from Hindu gods or human heroes who became saints after their death. Some believe these Bhutas to be from the sect of Ganas, followers and devotees of Lord Shiva.

The 2022 Movie Kanthara inspired from Panjurli.Bhuta Kola is portrayed in the main storyline of the film Kantara. The Karnataka Government announced a monthly allowance for Bhuta kola performers over 60 years of age due to the movie.
