Rev. Fr. A. Thomas – A Short Biography
Fr. A. Thomas, the founder and director of Anboli TV and Anboli Trust, was born at Duraisamypuram, Trichy, South India, on the eleventh of December 1950; the fourth child of Late Mr. Antonysamy and Mrs. Teresa.
Having done his early schooling at Ponnayya School in his hometown during the years 1956-62, he went on to complete his school studies at Saint Joseph’s School between the years 1962-68 while staying at Saint Agnes’ Seminary at Cuddalore.
The years 1968-1976 saw Fr. Thomas as a student of St. Peter’s Seminary. Diligent in priestly studies, he also acquired various skills, including that of playing an accordion. He spent his spare time during these years in honing his musical skills.
The deacon Thomas underwent Parish training during the year 1974 at the beautiful church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pondicherry (where he currently serves as parish priest from the year 2005).
The year 1976 brings to us the ordination of Rev. Fr. A. Thomas. During the two years that followed, Fr. Thomas assisted at the Parishes of Neyveli, Mugaiyur and at the Cuddalore Technical School. He then underwent industrial training at Chennai for two years, staying at St. Thomas Mount. This training received during the years 1979-81 served as a strong foundation for him who was to put to great use these industrial skills throughout his journey, both as correspondent of St. Joseph’s ITI (1981-88), and as parish priest of the various parishes that he was in charge of. Thousands of students have benefited out of his exemplary teaching and hard work; and his industrial skills have proved most useful in almost all the parishes that were given to his care.
He was the parish priest at Anilady, a rural parish situated near the Gingee fort, and also the Headmaster of Sacred Heart of Jesus School during the years 1989-1992. He spent 8 months as the parish priest of Panikkankuppam in 1992.
Father Thomas’ full time work in Pondicherry began with his role as parish priest at the Presentation Church at Neyveli, where he completed 5 years of dedicated service from 1992 to 1996.
The Assumption Church at Nellitope and its parish were assigned to him for the next 7 years (1996-2003). Being the parish priest of a church that was to shortly celebrate its 150th anniversary in the year 2001, he headed the impressive celebrations that included grand mass concelebrated by the Cardinal, bishops and archbishop, and also the release of a special cover by the Indian Postal Department in commemoration of this 150 year old church. The celebration was extra-special as it also marked the silver jubilee of Rev. Fr. Thomas’ ordination, with the parishioners celebrating their beloved parish priest. Another feat made possible during this time was the uploading of his sermons on the website www.arulosai.org in downloadable format. This site has been, and still continues to be resourceful to many people including young priests aiding them in the preparation of their sermons.
2003-2005: After his fruitful and successful stint at Nellitope, Fr. Thomas was now the parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Devoting his hours in renovating the building, he also went about performing his other priestly duties. Remarkable changes and additions added to the splendor of the already sublime cathedral.
The Legion of Mary groups throughout Pondy and Tamilnadu were raised to the Senatus; and Rev. Fr. A. Thomas was assigned its spiritual director.
In July 2005, the splendid Sacred Heart Church was entrusted to the care of its new parish priest, Rev.Fr. Thomas. The six years that followed can be rightly termed as the ‘Golden Era’ of the parish.
After watching the various measures taken by Fr. Thomas and the wonderful results that he achieved at the parishes of Nellitope and Cathedral, the parishioners of Sacred Heart Church were eager to have him as their parish priest; especially as the church’s centenary year was fast approaching.
Sacred Heart Church had obtained Fr. Thomas as its parish priest! No sooner than he arrived at the church, he began taking various measures in order to renovate the church and the parish.
A person’s residential space reflects his nature, to a large extent. Fr. Thomas’ room gives us an idea of his administrative abilities and capabilities. His untiring nature, vast knowledge of things and their workings, valuable suggestions and ideas came in handy during the time of renovating the church.
His various activities in this parish include the following:
Visiting every family in the parish
Verification of family details
Creating computerized records of the family details
Distribution of family cards
Improvement of the parish liturgy committee
Creation of an Adoration Hall
Release of the new monthly parish bulletin “Idhaya Anboli”
Purchase of a mega generator for the parish
Construction of the depot ‘Sudar Oli’
Release of the postal stamp bearing the church’s façade and the ornate wheel
The starting of a new TV channel ‘AnboliTV’ on TV and the internet, which can comfortably be said to top the list of achievements
Beginning of special masses for children and youth in the parish, on Sundays
Elevation of the Church to the rank of ‘Minor Basilica’, after various struggles, tremendous amount of work and painstaking efforts.
These are the major achievements of Very Rev. Fr. A.Thomas at the Sacred Heart Basilica.
