Temples of Villianur - Pondicherry Villianur is located at a distance of 9 km south of Pondicherry. Its the destination of many Hindu t He worshipped Lord Shiva here and was cured off his illness.

History has it that, the Chola King Dharmabala Chozhan ruling Kamalapuri, suffered from illness due to Karma in his previous birth. He then created a town here, which was earlier a forest of Vilwa trees and also constructed a temple for Lord Shiva (The famous Thirukaameeswarar Temple) and named the place as Vilvanallur, which in course of time changed as Villianur. Villianur has three important re

ligious centres. Thirukaameeswarar Temple for Hindus, Our Lady of Lourdes Church or the Villinaur Madha for Christians and Suthanpet mosque for Muslims. During the festival of each centre, all the religious people co-operate with each other without considering their religious differences. The Thirukaameeswarar temple present here is one of the oldest temples (built around 2 - 5 B.C.) in Tamil Nadu. Many historical evidences of the temple have been found dating back from early A.D. era. The temple has a mention in Thevaram hymns. The Villianur Madha present here was blessed by Pope Leo, is one of the few Shrines in Asia to be crowned by the pope Himself and the second Church
to be built outside France with the name Lourdes. The annual festivals in these two famous religious places and other temples in Villianur attract large crowd in and out of Pondicherry. Villianur is also a well known movie shooting spot in Pondicherry, having featured in 4 Oscar Award winning film Life of Pi and several other films.
