“Hey Dude, if God is so loving why does He allow this pandemic to contaminate the whole world and take so many precious human lives?” a question raised by one of my former colleagues who is a sceptic, looms large today even in the minds of believers as well. In fact, the situation has evolved so alarming in our nation that India today has the record-breaking number of death tolls in the world- 4529 per day. The unbelievingly smart virus is developing into new variant forms to cheat all human efforts to contain its spread. Speculations are on that the virus is a genetically engineered one by the over ambitious human minds of China. It is supported by the findings that although the virus was first detected in China, none of the Chinese metropolis was considerably affected by the pandemic. At the same time, the US and other major cities around the world situated far away from China are very badly infected. Another theory is that the virus had originated from a congested and thriving meat market in the Chinese province, Wuhan. As is well known the Chinese are fond of eating all sorts of flies, animals and reptiles which are in high demand in their markets though considered unclean for consumption by the rest of the world. One scientific version is that the human body acquired this fatal virus when someone in China consumed meat of Bats. The study also says that the virus till then had been silently dwelling in the body of bats for centuries without causing any harm to humans. Once the virus entered human body it went through several mutations and made human body its new host with adapted capability to spread among human bodies. Of late, it has developed into so many new variants to suit its survival in new atmospheres with enhanced spreading capability. To add fuel to the fire, a new kind of fungus infection called black fungus has also started evolving in post covid patients which has since been proved fatal to human beings. The pandemic has proved to be one of the most fatal calamities the world has ever encountered after the world war two.
Coming back to the question under quote, it is pertinent to note that the cause of origin of the infection of the virus on human beings is solely attributed to the action by man alone. How God can be held responsible for the foul deeds committed by man? Of course, God is aware of the misery and misfortune being confronted by man caused by his own action. Yet we wish that God should intervene and correct the situation. We think beyond all reasoning that it is the duty of God to save us even though we indulge in all sorts of evil deeds.
In the old Testament we learn that God imparts grace as well all misery to people during their lifetime in this world according to the virtues of vices committed by them. There are so many instances in the old testament where God helps and protects those who truly follow his will and punishes those who commit sin by violating his commandments. We therefore are prone to think that God will protect all Believers who obey his commandments and punishes those who rejects him and lead a sinful life. So, we try to lead a faithful life by doing the will of God and obeying his commandments with the prime intention that we may be looked after by God, always protected from all sorts of calamities and misfortunes in our life in this world. We also clandestinely wish that all those living around us who are sinners and reject God should be punished before our very own eyes as a gesture of justice done. Let us verify the authenticity of this concept.
The world would never be free from miseries and tribulations. The more man tries to ease the gravity of his miseries and add comforts to his life through new scientific inventions and technological advancement the more catastrophes he is forced to face like violent natural disasters, pandemics, new strains of harmful viruses, and political tensions and agitations. Every human being born into this world during the span of his life are subject to pass through the perils and pleasures of life irrespective of the fact that he is a believer or non-believer of God. As the rain showers alike on everyone, believers are not exempt from the miseries and hardship of this world. The best example of this truth is the unjust inhuman torments and agonies Jesus Christ had to pass through in his life in this world eventhough he is the Son of God. The experiences of all the apostles of Jesus were not different. In the old testament also, we come across myriad instances of the servants of God passing through various mishaps and dangers throughout their lives. Why is it so? The first reaction of any ordinary person would be ‘then why should I ever believe in an invisible God if He doesnot/cannot even exempt his servants from the problems they face in their life?’ The question is quite a logical one.
We are the creation of God. As such God has absolute knowledge of every nook and corner of our physique and psyche. God is aware of all ailments and deficiencies hidden in our bodies and even the minute thoughts and plans passing through our minds. Whoever it may be, everyone born into this world is destined to experience the sufferings and miseries inherent in human life in this world. We know that each person faces the problems of this world in entirely different manner. Some may face the problems boldly while others get collapsed even on slightest provocations. Some may stick closer to God on adversities and others may reject God. God is always watching the thoughts and feelings of each person. In times of distress God expects us to come closer to Him and put our entire faith in Him. God wants us to be faithful to Him even if we are put to untold hardships in life or even if our life is in danger. Of course, one must call upon God for deliverance from the problems he may pass through in his life. Undoubting prayer is the manifestation of our faith in God. To get our prayers answered depends on the will of God. Many of our prayers to God may go unanswered. God has definite plan for every individual. As the true servants of God our only duty is to submit ourselves before Him as the clay before a Potter. It is for God to mould us in whichever shapes and sizes He desires.
Therefore, in these days of Pandemic which has engulfed the whole world today what is left for us to do as true believers is to get least worried of the situation because we are in His mighty safe Hands. It is up to God to deliver us from the clutches of this pestilence or to make us bear His cross as our Saviour Jesus did! We may emphatically assert along with Apostle Paul as in Roman 8:38-39, ‘ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor death, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Amen!
