‘Rejoice in the Lord always: and again, I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men.The Lord is at hand. Be careful about nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And peace of God , which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’
Philippians 4: 4-7
Over the past couple of years, the world has been passing through a very disastrous phase due to the wide spread pandemic and the attributed miseries. Millions affected by Covid 19 have been wiped out from the face of the earth. The economic stability of so many nations, families and individuals has turned out so perilous that many have committed su***de. As we all know believers all over the world are relentlessly on their knees praying to God for His immediate intervention and the eradication of the pandemic. Bust as we see the virulent virus is steadily gaining strength through numerous mutations transforming into improved variants day by day making people even more perplexed and desperate. The social order itself has changed. Face masks has become part and parcel of the human costume.
At least for one moment, we are put to think why God does not answer to the prayers rising from the throats of His believers all over the world. Why does God allow such a disaster to persist? While brooding over the above doubts, the most vital fact we should remember is that there is an absolute purpose and reason for everything however severe or trivial happening in this world. The entire universe works according to the will and plan of God and man is a part of the universe. Life on this planet is no coincidence. During the inconsistent voids of the pre historic period, an unknown heavenly body, may be another planet, had to collide with earth causing it to tilt and incline its axis into an exact slant of 23.5 degrees, just adequate, to create the atmosphere for the first beat of life on earth. The divinely caused collision created earth’s natural satellite, the moon as well. A vigilant eye can observe throughout history an array of similar happenings both creative and destructive to mankind. God has definite plan for man which no human mind is equipped to decipher.
It is a fact that some of our prayers go unheeded and unanswered and we often feel annoyed over it and sometimes feel unconfident and doubtful of God. But as Apostle Paul recommends, we must rejoice always in Christ. How can that be possible when what we pray for is denied? How can anyone rejoice in such a losing situation? Apart from the pandemic, several other personal problems in life are not seen mitigated through our prayers. The problem is that we always wish to run our lives according to our own plans, rather than God’s plan. We think that we are the absolute authority over our destiny. That is an utter misunderstanding on the part of man. We are only a part of God’s creation. Like clay in the hand of a potter, it is God who moulds our life in the manner and shapes he prefers. Of course, we have our own desires and wishes in life. There is no one who does not like happiness and wishes to experience miseries and disasters in his life. But agonies and failures are natural to human life just like peace and happiness. It may be that God at times wishes to strengthen our faith and endurance through the ordeals in life. As true believers we may have to pass through perils and hardships which God may like us to experience in life. As the Apostle puts it, we by bearing the pain and sufferings in our lives are having fellowship of the Sufferings of Jesus being made conformable unto His death and feel the power of His resurrection. In John 16:33 Jesus assures: In the world, you will have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world. Does it mean that we may not pray to God for deliverance from our hardships? Not at all. As the children of God we have the privilege to ask our Father for our needs in life and for the deliverance from the chaos and frustrations that haunt our life. But that completes our part to play. By faith we have done we ought to do. We have earnestly and in full confidence represented our needs before our all caring and loving God. It is up to God to act upon and dispose our pleadings in the manner and time He prefers. Having done that Paul assures us that ‘the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.’
However hard your experiences in life may be, get rid of all your anxieties, be of good cheer and rejoice, after entrusting all your needs to God and leaving the ultimate decision to Him alone! Amen!

“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭4:16-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Foot note:
When We know by faith that we have an Omnipotent God who created this whole universe, seen and unseen, from sheer emptiness, always taking care of us in His own palm, there is no place for any anxiety or fear in our life which are only clear signs of our own mistrust in God!

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

The withering of the fig tree consequent on the curse imposed by Jesus, as narrated by St. Mark Chapter 11:13,14, not only signifies the fruitless life of the then Jewish society which rejected Jesus and todays so called Christians who habitually deny and reject Him in their life, but also emphasises the need of powerful prayers raising out of hearts filled with undaunting faith in the power of the Almighty God. Why do most of our prayers go unheeded.? When Peter exclaims and expresses his excitement over the sight of the fig tree which was got all withered up soon after Jesus had cursed it, Jesus admonishes him to have unfailing and undoubted faith in God for getting such miracles happen in life. God will act upon the needs of man even if it is to contravene the laws of nature. The fig tree was withered without any apparent cause except that a curse was cast upon it by Jesus finding no fruits on it against His wish. The incident was evidently against the laws of nature just like several other miraculous incidents as narrated in various portions of the Bible, many of which a major portion of the Christians today consider only as Bible fictions taught in Sunday School classes.
In Mathew 17:19 when the disciples asked Jesus why they could not heal the boy with epilepsy, Jesus replied that they couldn’t due to their lack of faith in God. Had they had faith as minute as a mustard seed, they could even move a mountain by prayer. In yet another instance when Peter tried to imitate Jesus’ walking over the sea, he began to sink, frightened by the strong wind and huge waves. Jesus asks Peter why did you ever doubt?
Jesus through this episode reminds us that to get our prayers for our genuine needs in life answered by God, unfailing faith beyond the least doubt is essential, even if our pleas are seemingly unsolvable and beyond all natural courses of remedies. So, one needs to have faith to get his/her prayers answered by God. Alright! How can one determine he has got true faith in God? All of us claim that we are believers who have faith in God. Three factors are essentially imperative if one is said to have faith in someone else. First and foremost is that he should believe that the person really exists. Secondly, he must believe the person’s words as trustworthy and true. and thirdly he must follow him through adopting the person’s doctrines in his life. Likewise, we can be assured that we do have true faith in God only when the above three conditions are satisfied fully in our personal life. As we know today, most Christians are doubtful whether they are to believe in the existence of God and the genuineness of the Word of God. Whenever they do not get answers to any of their prayers, they would drift away from God. They regularly go to Church just to participate in the social gathering there rather than to Worship God in full heart, spirit, and strength.
In the above instance of withering of the fig tree in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus also reveals another equally important prerequisite for getting answers to our prayers. That is, we should forgive our enemies who persecute us through their words and deeds, before we go up to God with our prayers, just as Jesus prayed on the Cross to His Father to forgive those who tortured and crucified Him. We should inevitably do away with our hatred to others and reconcile with them before we approach God with our supplications.
If you truly believe in Jesus and the Word of God, remember it is His promise to us that all our prayers before God will be answered however hard it may look like to happen or whenever we think that only a miracle could solve the problems in our life, we take up before God.

“Hey Dude, if God is so loving why does He allow this pandemic to contaminate the whole world and take so many precious human lives?” a question raised by one of my former colleagues who is a sceptic, looms large today even in the minds of believers as well. In fact, the situation has evolved so alarming in our nation that India today has the record-breaking number of death tolls in the world- 4529 per day. The unbelievingly smart virus is developing into new variant forms to cheat all human efforts to contain its spread. Speculations are on that the virus is a genetically engineered one by the over ambitious human minds of China. It is supported by the findings that although the virus was first detected in China, none of the Chinese metropolis was considerably affected by the pandemic. At the same time, the US and other major cities around the world situated far away from China are very badly infected. Another theory is that the virus had originated from a congested and thriving meat market in the Chinese province, Wuhan. As is well known the Chinese are fond of eating all sorts of flies, animals and reptiles which are in high demand in their markets though considered unclean for consumption by the rest of the world. One scientific version is that the human body acquired this fatal virus when someone in China consumed meat of Bats. The study also says that the virus till then had been silently dwelling in the body of bats for centuries without causing any harm to humans. Once the virus entered human body it went through several mutations and made human body its new host with adapted capability to spread among human bodies. Of late, it has developed into so many new variants to suit its survival in new atmospheres with enhanced spreading capability. To add fuel to the fire, a new kind of fungus infection called black fungus has also started evolving in post covid patients which has since been proved fatal to human beings. The pandemic has proved to be one of the most fatal calamities the world has ever encountered after the world war two.
Coming back to the question under quote, it is pertinent to note that the cause of origin of the infection of the virus on human beings is solely attributed to the action by man alone. How God can be held responsible for the foul deeds committed by man? Of course, God is aware of the misery and misfortune being confronted by man caused by his own action. Yet we wish that God should intervene and correct the situation. We think beyond all reasoning that it is the duty of God to save us even though we indulge in all sorts of evil deeds.
In the old Testament we learn that God imparts grace as well all misery to people during their lifetime in this world according to the virtues of vices committed by them. There are so many instances in the old testament where God helps and protects those who truly follow his will and punishes those who commit sin by violating his commandments. We therefore are prone to think that God will protect all Believers who obey his commandments and punishes those who rejects him and lead a sinful life. So, we try to lead a faithful life by doing the will of God and obeying his commandments with the prime intention that we may be looked after by God, always protected from all sorts of calamities and misfortunes in our life in this world. We also clandestinely wish that all those living around us who are sinners and reject God should be punished before our very own eyes as a gesture of justice done. Let us verify the authenticity of this concept.
The world would never be free from miseries and tribulations. The more man tries to ease the gravity of his miseries and add comforts to his life through new scientific inventions and technological advancement the more catastrophes he is forced to face like violent natural disasters, pandemics, new strains of harmful viruses, and political tensions and agitations. Every human being born into this world during the span of his life are subject to pass through the perils and pleasures of life irrespective of the fact that he is a believer or non-believer of God. As the rain showers alike on everyone, believers are not exempt from the miseries and hardship of this world. The best example of this truth is the unjust inhuman torments and agonies Jesus Christ had to pass through in his life in this world eventhough he is the Son of God. The experiences of all the apostles of Jesus were not different. In the old testament also, we come across myriad instances of the servants of God passing through various mishaps and dangers throughout their lives. Why is it so? The first reaction of any ordinary person would be ‘then why should I ever believe in an invisible God if He doesnot/cannot even exempt his servants from the problems they face in their life?’ The question is quite a logical one.
We are the creation of God. As such God has absolute knowledge of every nook and corner of our physique and psyche. God is aware of all ailments and deficiencies hidden in our bodies and even the minute thoughts and plans passing through our minds. Whoever it may be, everyone born into this world is destined to experience the sufferings and miseries inherent in human life in this world. We know that each person faces the problems of this world in entirely different manner. Some may face the problems boldly while others get collapsed even on slightest provocations. Some may stick closer to God on adversities and others may reject God. God is always watching the thoughts and feelings of each person. In times of distress God expects us to come closer to Him and put our entire faith in Him. God wants us to be faithful to Him even if we are put to untold hardships in life or even if our life is in danger. Of course, one must call upon God for deliverance from the problems he may pass through in his life. Undoubting prayer is the manifestation of our faith in God. To get our prayers answered depends on the will of God. Many of our prayers to God may go unanswered. God has definite plan for every individual. As the true servants of God our only duty is to submit ourselves before Him as the clay before a Potter. It is for God to mould us in whichever shapes and sizes He desires.
Therefore, in these days of Pandemic which has engulfed the whole world today what is left for us to do as true believers is to get least worried of the situation because we are in His mighty safe Hands. It is up to God to deliver us from the clutches of this pestilence or to make us bear His cross as our Saviour Jesus did! We may emphatically assert along with Apostle Paul as in Roman 8:38-39, ‘ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor death, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Amen!
