Baptist Union Church - History Baptist Union Church, Patna
Baptist Union Church - History Baptist Union Church, Patna. (ESTD 1880) At the beginning of the 20th century, a series of Anglo American Conferences in New York were held. The first Missionary Conference in 1910 was held at Edinburg. The debate was on changing the destiny of mankind with the love of God, Paving the way for gospel outreach. It was left that partnership with other Churches was important, this event stimulated the world Christian community to self-governing of Churches around the World. Two thoughts prevailed, "Fill the earth with the knowledge of the Lord and the other: the sense to preach the gospel was God's command.
A host of missionaries left their countries making their way to north India, to name a few illustrious ones were William Caray and Alexander Duff. William Carey was eager to learn the Indian language, he soon mastered Sanskrit, Bengali, and Hindi. Patna became the hub of Christian activity, a chapel with a cross on top indicated the presence of Christian activity and an honest community. The opening of schools, orphanages, women hostels, vocational institutions, widows homes, and leprosy centers by the Baptist Missionaries at Patna was commendable. In the year 1843, a school and hostel for boys at Patna was set, also known as Collier Memorial. It existed till 1989, only to be disposed of illegally the same year. In its place now stands a market complex where once stood a chapel for God's worship stands a witness to the decay of missionary work and human greed. With the arrival of lady Baptist Missionaries, girls' schools were set up at Patna and Gaya. A leading Baptist lady missionary, Miss I.N.Angus, Director of Zenana Mission, started Baptist Middle School for girls with hostel at Patna in the year 1898. It housed three sections, the girls' school, hostel and Teachers Training school, Miss Angus Girls School, its Teacher's training got recognition by the government in 1935. It was a remarkable achievement envisioned by William Carey, to establish education for the poor and underprivileged. Despite the upheavals, this school of repute which was a shelter for the homeless fell into decay and was finally disposed of by the BMSC in 2008 after 110 years of dedicated service.
At present, the Church has filed cases in different Courts to put an end to save less destruction and is trying to save the lost properties that fall under its jurisdiction. These properties being sold due to breach of trust is now controlled by the real custodians' Baptist Union Church, Bakergunj, Patna. In the new year by God's Grace, we are confident that all our properties will be restored if we continue to unite and call upon the name of the Lord.
