Lord Shiva is one of the principal deities of Hinduism, part of the Hindu Trinity alongside Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the preserver. Shiva is known as the destroyer or transformer, but this destruction is not necessarily negative; it is often viewed as the necessary process for transformation and regeneration. He is worshipped in numerous forms and is the subject of a rich mythology, symbolizing themes such as creation and destruction, asceticism, and the cosmic dance.

Shiva is often depicted with a third eye on his forehead, a crescent moon in his hair, the Ganges River flowing from his matted hair, a blue throat from consuming poison to save the universe, and a trident in his hand. He is also shown with his mount, Nandi the bull. One of the most iconic representations of Shiva is as the Nataraja, performing the cosmic dance that destroys the old universe and makes way for the new.

Shiva is central to Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism that focuses on the worship of Shiva. He is also revered in other Hindu traditions and is associated with various philosophical concepts and practices.
