Ganapati Bappa Morya

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. The festival usually lasts for 10 days, starting on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which falls between August and September. The date varies each year according to the lunar calendar.

Key Aspects of Ganesh Chaturthi:

1. Idol Installation: Families and communities bring home or set up elaborately decorated clay idols of Lord Ganesha. This is done with prayers and rituals.

2. Prayers and Offerings: Devotees perform aarti (prayer rituals), offer sweets, flowers, and fruits. The popular sweet dish associated with the festival is modak, which is considered Ganesha's favorite.

3. Public Celebrations: In many parts of India, especially Maharashtra, large pandals (temporary stages) are set up, and massive Ganesha idols are displayed for public worship. Cultural events, music, and dance performances are organized during the festival.

4. Visarjan (Immersion): On the last day, the idols are immersed in water (rivers, lakes, or the sea), symbolizing Ganesha's return to Mount Kailash, his heavenly abode. The immersion is accompanied by large processions with chants of "Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya" (O Lord Ganesha, come again next year).

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Goa, as well as among the Indian diaspora worldwide.

THE RAM MANDIR AYODHYA
The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ram, the major deity in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The temple is being constructed on the site believed to be Ram Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Lord Ram.

The Ram Mandir is significant both religiously and politically in India. The location has been the subject of a long-standing legal and religious dispute, which escalated in 1992 when the Babri Masjid, which stood at the same site, was demolished by a large crowd of Hindu activists, sparking nationwide riots.

After decades of legal battles, in November 2019, the Supreme Court of India ruled in favor of the Hindu claimants, allowing the construction of the temple. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 5, 2020. The construction is expected to be completed in phases, with the main structure opening for devotees in 2024.

The design of the Ram Mandir is based on traditional Indian temple architecture, and the project is seen as a symbol of faith for millions of Hindus. The temple complex will also include several facilities for pilgrims and visitors.

The Indian Air Force Aircraft that flew from Assam's Jorhat went missing when the last contact was made at 1pm on 3rd June. The 40 yr old aircraft has an SOS device that is 14 years old and was deemed obsolete in 2009. The fact that the Indian govt can spend money on statues instead of infrastructure and necessary safety equipment is something everyone needs to think about. There are 13 people, including 6 officers, aboard the AN-32 in question. Despite the gravity of the situation, there is no debate about the outdated aircrafts or obsolete technology going on in the country. The safety of our soldiers should be one of the top priorities when they put their lives on the line to protect us. This hanicapped infrastructure is not what they deserve.

PRAYAGRAJ KUMBH 2019
In Prayagraj, hearing the word “Kumbh”, creates the picturesque vision of Triveni sangam in one’s mind. At the sacred confluence of rivers, huge multitudes filled with sense of devotion move like waves in the ocean. ‘Shahi Snaan’ of Akharas, chanting of vedic mantras and elucidations of religious hymns in the Pandaals, proclamations of knowledge, Tatvamimansa by rishis, spiritual music, mesmerising sounds of instruments, holy dip in the sangam with utmost devotion fills the heart of devotees with immense joy. Also, prayers are offered at many divine temples exhibiting the greatness of Prayagraj Kumbh.

The Kumbh Mela at Prayag is very different as compared to Kumbh at other places due to many reasons. Firstly, the tradition of long-term Kalpvas is practised only in Prayag. Secondly, the Triveni Sangam is considered as the centre of the earth in few scriptures. Thirdly, Lord Brahma performed the Yajna here for creating the universe. Fourthly, Prayagraj is called the shrine of pilgrimages, but the most important reason is that the significance of performing rituals and tapas at Prayagraj is of highest among all pilgrimages and provides one with the highest virtue.

Maharshi Markandeya in ‘Matsya Purana’ told Yudhishtra that this place is specifically protected by all the Gods. Residing here for a month and practicing complete asceticism, remaining celibate and duly performing oblations for his deity and ancestors fulfils all the desires. It is believed that an individual who takes the holy dip in the sacred waters relieves his/her ten generations from the cycle of rebirth, and hence, achieving salvation. Moreover, it is said that just by providing services to pilgrims at Prayag during Kumbh will help an individual to gain redemption from temptation. Prayag is visited by tens of millions of pilgrims because these beliefs. Saints, ascetics and their followers pay their respect and perform various traditional rituals at Triveni sangam. The amazed devotees line up to watch the rituals being performed.

The Kumbh Mela at Prayag takes place for approximately 55 days, spread over thousands of hectares around the sangam area, and becomes the greatest of ephemeral city in the world. Regularity of this celebration continuing since ancient times is unique in itself. Ever increasing pressure of populace and expanding cities tend to engulf the rivers and events like Kumbh, graces the rivers with the profound status of creators of the world. There is a deeply enrooted feeling of devotion and faith flowing in the veins of every Indian since eternity.

After independence, various rules were framed resulting in few changes in organising Kumbh Mela. The government made provisions for providing basic amenities to the pilgrims. The government upon realising the importance of Kumbh and understanding the requirements of huge number of pilgrims visiting the mela took multiple steps in public interest in order to facilitate the pilgrims. Importance was given towards providing security services, better traffic management, lighting and health facilities and ensuring the same. It is difficult to say who took responsibility for these amenities before government made provisions for the same. However, after passing the law, the responsibility of providing the basic facilities lies with the government. On the same lines, formation of Prayagraj Mela Authority 2018 is an important stepping-stone towards organising the event of the scale of Kumbh. The formation of Prayagraj Mela Authority will ensure that the basic amenities are provided in Kumbh 2019 to the devotees visiting the Mela. For the Kumbh 2019, modern technologies are being deployed to enhance the ‘Divyata’ and ‘Bhavyata’ of the Kumbh. Gates based on various themes will welcome pilgrims and information boards will guide them to their destination. Huge pandals and tents will facilitate the stay of pilgrims and visitors. Various lighting arrangements have been made on the banks including façade lighting that will engulf the pilgrims in diverse colours. Also, different cuisines and gourmet food in the food courts shall satisfy the appetite of the pilgrims.

Tanah Lot means "Land [sic: in the] Sea" in the Balinese language. Located in Tabanan,Bali ,Indonesia about 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Denpasar, the temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide.

Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha. During his travels along the south coast he saw the rock-island's beautiful setting and rested there. Some fishermen saw him, and bought him gifts. Nirartha then spent the night on the little island. Later he spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods. The main deity of the temple is Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara, who is the sea god or sea power and these days, Nirartha is also worshipped here.

The Tanah Lot temple was built and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. Each of the sea temples was established within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast. In addition to Balinese mythology, the temple was significantly influenced by Hinduism.

At the base of the rocky island, venomous sea snakes are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. The temple is purportedly protected by a giant snake, which was created from Nirartha's selendang (a type of sash) when he established the island.

Janmashtami 2015: What Makes this Festival Such a Grand Affair

Considered to be one of the major festivals in the Indian calendar, Janmashtami is celebrated with fervour every year. It marks the birthday of Lord Krishna, who is also lovingly called Govinda, Balgopal, Jagadguru, Manmohan, Murlimanohar, among others. Hindus across different regions in the country consider this day to be auspicious (the eight day of Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravan) and follow various customs to show their devotion to their beloved God.

A Glimpse into Lord Krishna’s Life

As the legend goes, in the kingdom of Mathura, Lord Krishna was born to Princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. The Princess’ evil brother Kansa, the then king, was keeping Devaki and Vasudeva locked in the prison because of a prophecy which had stated that the eight son of Devaki would kill Kansa. To safeguard his life, he went on to mercilessly kill all the six children that Devaki had borne.

However, the seventh child who was informed to be miscarried was mystically transferred to the womb of Princess Rohini in Vrindavan who grew up to become Balram, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. During the birth of Krishna, Vasudeva was guided by the lord to carry the baby to Vrindavan to the house of Nanda and Yasoda, and return with their girl child born on the same day to present her to King Kansa in the hope that he wouldn’t harm her because the prophecy had said that the eight ‘son’ would be the one to kill him. But the merciless Kansa held the child and tried to throw her against a rock when she rose to the air taking the form of Goddess Durga and warning him about his death.

Lord Krishna grew up in Vrindavan under the loving care of Mother Yasoda. There are numerous stories that are recited till today about the many mischief of little Krishna and how he got to be known as the ‘makhan chor’, for his love for white butter. Through the course of his life he went on to kill many demons and safeguard the people, and eventually, as the prophecy had said, kill Kansa to regain his kingdom.

Janmashtami Celebrations - The Chappan Bhog

The devotees of Lord Krishna patiently wait for Janmashtami every year. Though different regions carry out the celebrations in their own ways, most people fast the entire day and stay up till midnight which is believed to be the time when Lord Krishna was born. As a common practice, after sundown, they recite hymns and sing bhagans in the name of the Lord and break their fast only after midnight. The following day, which is referred to as ‘Nanda Utsav’, people distribute gifts and sweets to near and dear ones.

As an offering to the Lord, they put together a list of 56 food items which is referred to as the Chappan Bhog, which is later distributed among the people after the fast. As legend goes, it constitutes Krishna’s favourite dishes and usually includes cereals, fruits, dry fruits, sweets, drinks, namkeen and pickles in quantities of seven under each category.

There are also variations to this with some people offering 16 kinds of namkeen, 20 kinds of sweets and 20 kinds of dry fruits. Some of the common items which are found in the bhog are makhan mishri, kheer, rasgulla, jalebi, rabri, mathri, malpua, mohanbhog, chutney, murabba, saag, dahi, rice, dal, kadi, ghewar, chila, papad, moong dal ka halwa, pakoda, khichadi, brinjal ka sabji, lauki ka sabji, poori, badam milk, tikkis, cashews, almonds, pistachios, and elachi among others. The bhog also needs to be arranged in a particular sequence, starting with milk items, moving on the besan-based treats and salty food, and ending with dry fruits and elachi (cardamom).

Why 56 items?

If you are curious why the bhog includes 56 items specifically, here’s the reason – to protect his people from the wrath of Lord Indra (the God of rain), Lord Krishna had lifted the Govardhan Parvat (mountain) and stood still by placing it at the tip of his little finger for seven days. The people were saved by standing under it. It is said that Lord Krishna used to have eight food items every day. But during this time, he didn’t consume any food. So at the end of seven days, out of their gratitude for the Lord, the people made him a total of 56 dishes (eight dishes multiplied by 7) including his favourite dishes.

Other Celebrations

Mumbai celebrates Janmashtami in a grand manner where one gets to see the custom of forming human tower by a group of young boys to break a pot of fresh butter tied to a considerable height. Different groups have competitions amongst them for the prize money associated with it. In most other parts of India, young children are dressed as Lord Krishna with a peacock father as an adornment for the head, jewellery over the neck, and a flute in the hand.

People also gather together for kirtan (singing religious songs) and reading parts from The Bhagavad Gita. In certain regions, people also organise theatre enacting the Rasa Lila from the holy book, depicting the story of Lord Krishna.

Across India, especially in the south, people decorate the entrance of their houses with kolams/ rangolis (beautifully patterns made with coloured powders or rice powder). They also make earnest efforts to clean the interiors of the house and place Krishna idols, incense sticks, garlands, etc.

JAI MAA VAISHNO DEVI
Vaishno Devi Mandir (Hindi: वैष्णोदेवी मन्दिर) is a very popular Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess, located at the Trikuta Mountains within the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. More than 10 million pilgrims visit this shrine every yeaR

Holy Shrine
A pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is considered to be one of the holiest pilgrimages among Hindus. Popular the world over as Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata, which means, the Mother who fulfills whatever Her children wish for, 'Mata'(literally meaning mother) Vaishno devi's shrine resides in a holy cave located in the folds of the three peaked mountain named Trikuta (pronounced as Trikoot). The Holy Cave attracts millions of devotees every year - the number of Yatris(pilgrims and tourists) visiting the Holy Shrine annually now exceeds ten million.

The Holy Cave is situated at an altitude of 5200 ft. The Yatris have to undertake a trek of nearly 14.5km from the base camp at Katra. Darshans are open round the clock throughout the year. At the culmination of their pilgrimage, the yatris see three natural rock formation known as 'Pindies' inside the holy cave.

The journey to the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is believed to start with "Call of Mata". It is a belief that the Divine Mother sends a call to her children and once a person receives it, wherever he is, is bound to visit the Mother to receive Her unbounded love and blessings. A popular slogan in the local folklore expresses it- "Maa Aap Bulandi" - which literally means "Mother Herself Calls". It is also believed that upon the Call of Mata, a person needs to just take one step and leave the rest to Her and his journey gets completed with Her divine blessings. Simultaneously, it is also believed that unless there is a call or Bulawa no one can visit the Shrine or have Her blessings, howsoever high or mighty one may be.
