This was too good not to share.. it is a lovely insight into the Kirpa of Satguru Ji Maharaj and the importance of Shabad.
Once King of Mandi visited Guru Maharaj ji - just when he entered the Darbar - Hukamanama sahib was being read "Lekhey kat-hay na chuttiyae" - After the Darbar, he asked Guru ji - "if everyone has to pay according to Karma, and no one can escape Karma - then what is the purpose of Gurbani /Guru /Dharma?"
Guru Maharaj ji asked him to stay with sangat for few days and he will answer it with time. King decided to stay - next morning he was very upset -
Guru Maharaj ji asked what had happened - He said "instead of a blissful night at feet of Guru - I had very bad dreams - I dreamt of death many times" Guru Maharaj ji told him not to worry.
Next day the same thing happened - he again had a similar dream - that he has died, now re-born as lowly Chandaal (people who prepare dead skin of animals for further use - like for cobblers), he lived a long life and died again, leaving behind a son(and the wife). Guru Maharaj ji again told him not to worry - Guru Maharaj ji took him on Shikar(hunting) - The king got lost, couldn't locate the hunting team, somehow he reached one village, where he got off the horse to drink water from a well. While he was drinking water - a boy approached him - it was the same boy from dream (his son in dream). The boy was shocked and said "how come you are alive - you died few days ago" - the boy gathered the whole village - King knew what he was saying - but declined that he was the same dead person. Somehow Guru Maharaj ji reached that place - King told Guru Maharaj ji all the story - Guru Maharaj ji asked villagers "where is the dead body - buried or cremated" - villagers told Maharaj it was cremated - when they dug - the dead body was there - so King got freed - it was a case of mistaken identity. Anyways, hunting party came back. King again dreamed the same - he died over and over - in the last birth - he was wandering somewhere in orchard - he ate some fruit - the seeds got stuck in his teeth - somehow while attempting to get seeds out - he died, yet again. He woke up - very upset. But he realized something weird was happening to him. He went to see Guru Maharaj ji and asked "Guruji please explain what happened - why I died so many times" Guru Maharaj ji told him that you asked "what is the purpose of Dharma, when one has pay for all his karmas". These dreams are your answers. Guru Maharaj ji told him "yes! it is true one has to pay for his karma, but what Guru does is - makes life easy for bhagat - sometimes Karmas can also be paid in dreams - sometimes Guru pays from his own pocket, sometimes Guru takes the punishment on himself". The King finally realized the importance of Shabad "Gur Ka Shabad katay kot karam".
