What Happens When You Drive Out Demons
Posted: 23 Oct 2013 02:55 PM PDT
People have asked me to share more about my trip to Argentina. I have many stories I could recount, but I thought I'd share about a demonic deliverance that took place in Buenos Aires. I share this account not because I want to focus on the sensational, but because I think we need to be more cognizant of our responsibility to expel darkness.
This may go against some of our religious sensibilities, but Jesus told us to not only preach, but heal the sick and drive out demons. Matthew recounts the following words that the Lord declared,
"As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give." (Matthew 10:7-8)
I take seriously what Jesus said about this and I desire to see more breakthrough. I know that a lot of Christians are uncomfortable with this reality, but demonic deliverance is something that the Lord has compelled us to do.
Now back to Argentina. I was invited to minister in a Saturday evening evangelistic service in one of the suburbs of Buenos Aires. The crowd was already quite intense as I arrived late. People were packed in the large room - wall to wall - with standing room only. You could feel the electricity in the air.
As I sat on the platform I noticed a very troubled woman in the crowd. When you looked at her, there were dark circles around her eyes and a strained look on her face. She looked rather pained with her stringy blonde hair and gaunt features. Yet, you could tell that she really wanted help.
As I began to pray at the end of the service, she came to the front. She told me through an interpreter she had an inhibiting mental condition, but it was clear to me she was afflicted by darkness.
I placed my hand on her head and began to command evil to go. She closed her eyes, gritted her teeth and began to screech. Thankfully two of the ushers were nearby because she violently gripped my jacket and began pulling. They held her arms as I vigorously prayed for her. Her voice deepened and she began speak very fiercely in Spanish. I was glad that I couldn't understand what was being said.
I prayed more aggressively and was determined to be empowered by the Spirit. I sensed the room was suddenly filled with love and hope. This afflicted woman began to tremble and fall to the ground. She laid there for a few minutes. I honestly didn't know whether she was free or not.
She finally got up off the floor and showed signs of freedom. I asked the translator to help me make sure she was fully committed to the Lord. We prayed a prayer of revocation and commitment to Jesus. You could feel some real breakthrough taking place.
Interestingly as we began to leave, evil tried to raise its ugly head once more. The translator was relatively inexperienced and seemed shaken by the ordeal. It seemed that there was some residue of the encounter that was affecting her. I boldly prayed and the strength and protection of the Lord come upon her. It was later that evening that she was filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time!
This kind of experience is not exclusive to the cities and barrios of Argentina. Similar things are affecting people right here in North America. Whether we see it or not, darkness is always trying to gain a foothold. We need to be better positioned to fight against it. We have a responsibility to display the glory and goodness of Jesus!
