Kantar Ters (Cantando um Terço do Rosário) or The Sung Rosary is a unique Tradition of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, Salcete, Goa. It consists of the Rosary sung in a tune, before the 1st Mass of the day, during the Novenas and the feast day of our Lady of Rosary.
Our Senior Parishioners can’t exactly recollect since when this unique tradition had started; but they say that they have been attending it since their Childhood. Therefore, this tradition must be definitely more than 100 years old.
Every day, at dawn before the c***s start crowing, Parishioners gather in the Church, the young and the old, at 4.20 am during novena days and even earlier on the feast day, at 4 am to sing the “Kantar Ters” dedicated to the Patroness of our village. It is so pleasing to see the whole Church sing the Rosary with Joy.
The old original words of “Amchea Bapa” (Our Father), “Noman Moriê” (Hail Mary), “Serenoetan Tuca Ranniê” (Hail Holy Queen) and “Virgem Maê De Deus” along with their tunes have been preserved without any changes. Since the last few years musical instruments like Keyboard and Violins have been used to add beauty to the “Kantar Ters”.
All the Parish Priests of Navelim over the years and even many senior Priests have appreciated this tradition and have supported it during their tenures in Navelim Parish, due to which the tradition has remained alive till date and hope it will continue for more generations to come. Deu borem korum.
