श्री खाटू श्याम जी का नाम बर्बरीक था। जो की महा बलि भीम का पौत्र और गटोदगच्छ के पुत्र थे। बर्बरीक (खाटू श्याम) अतिरभी वीर थे महाभारत के काल युध समय भगवन श्री कृष्ण ने अपने सुदर्शन चक्र से सर को धड़ से अलग कर दिया था। एक विशाल शिखर पर स्तापित किया और वरदान दिया कि तुम ही कल युग में मेरे श्याम रूप में पूजे जाओगे। कल युग में ऐसी मान्यता है कि एक बार कोई खाटू शयाम के द्वार पर चला जाये , उसे जीवन में सुख अथवा सम्पत्ति का आभाव कभी नहीं होता अथवा दुःख दारिद्र्य से मुख्त हो जाता है।
