The Gyanvapi Mosque is located in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was constructed by Aurangzeb in 1669 upon demolition of an older Shiva temple.[1]
The name of the mosque is derived from that of the adjoining well, Gyan Vapi ("Well of Knowledge").[5][g] Oral accounts indicate that Brahmin priests were allowed to reside in the premises of the mosque and exert their privileges on issues of Hindu pilgrimage.[2]
