Readings:
Genesis 3: 9-15, 20 or Acts 1: 12-14;
Psalm 87: 1-2, 3 and 5, 6-7
John 19: 25-34

As He hung from the Cross, Jesus gave us something wonderful – His Mother. From that moment, Mary has always been there for the Church, interceding for us.

Today’s Gospel tells us that Mary was steadfast to the very end as she watched her crucified son die, revealing her courage, her faithfulness to the will of God and her trust in God’s providence. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles narrates how, after the resurrection, Mary continued to be a support for the Apostles in that upper room, as they waited, in prayer, for the Holy Spirit.

Mary has ‘been there’ for the Church from the very beginning.

This is why Pope Paul VI honoured Mary with the title “Mother of the Church” in November, 1964. Pope Francis subsequently declared, in 2018, that the Monday after Pentecost would be permanently observed as the Memorial of ‘Mary Mother of the Church’. This day reminds us of Mary’s maternal love for all of us, for she is “the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed”.

2nd June 2022

Readings:
Acts 22: 30; 23: 6-11;
Psalm 16: 1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11;
John 17: 20-26

A leak that springs in the front of a boat is of equal concern to the people at the back of that boat. Paul knew that the Pharisees and the Sadducees were divided in their belief concerning ‘the resurrection of the dead’. He used this to his advantage when he was brought before the Roman tribune, in the presence of his accusers. Rather than specifically refer to the resurrection of Jesus, Paul declared that he was on trial for preaching about the resurrection from the dead, which he knew the Pharisees also believed in. And this began an argument between the Sadducees and Pharisees, who forgot the real reason why Paul was on trial!

Unity among people professing the same faith is fundamental, especially if the believers are made up of people of diverse cultures and orientation. This is why, in today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus praying passionately for unity among all believers... that the world may know Christians by the unity and love they profess.

Jesus’ prayer was for us too. Can the world, today, recognize us by our love and unity?

Readings:
Acts 19: 1-8;
Psalm 68: 2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab;
John 16: 29-33

On his missionary journey to Ephesus, Paul found disciples of John the Baptist who had received a baptism of repentance, rejecting their old way of life. However, when they heard of what Paul spoke, they wished to be baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus, with water and the Holy Spirit. This was symbolic not merely of washing away of all sin, but also being reborn in the Spirit... receiving new life! To those who accept such a baptism, there is no promise that life will be easy; and the disciples were the first to realise this.

In the Gospel today we hear of Jesus prophesy how His followers would all abandon Him in the face of trouble, but He also goes on to encourage them to be steadfast, assuring them of the triumph of good.

Lord, I pray for the courage to live by what I profess even though I may be afraid!

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Readings:
Acts 15: 1-2, 22-29;
Psalm 67: 2-3, 5, 6, 8;
Revelation 21: 10-14, 22-23;
John 14: 23-29

In the Gospel today, Jesus assures His disciples that even though He would not be physically present with them, He and the Father would continue to dwell in them in a special way through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would teach & guide them; inspire & enlighten them; comfort & support them… all they needed to do was to be aware of the presence of the Spirit and open to the Spirit’s working in their lives.

The first reading is a proof of this promise of Jesus. It was through prayer that the apostles received the inspiration & guidance of the Holy Spirit to take the final decision not to impose the Mosaic Law on non-Jewish converts to Christianity.

We too, in life, are often confronted with difficult situations, dilemmas, decisions to make. How do we know if we have acted rightly? Jesus tells us in the Gospel today that we will know if the choices / decisions we have made are right, when we experience that inner peace. The peace the world gives is quite different from the peace that comes from the Spirit.

21st May 2022

Readings:
Acts 16: 1-10;
Psalm 100: 1b-2, 3, 5;
John 15: 18-21

The first reading portrays the Apostles as attentive and sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. They do not venture where the Spirit prohibits them from going and go instead to where the Spirit leads them. The result was that: “Day after day the churches grew stronger in faith and increased in number.”

But how did the church get this idea? By observing Jesus who Himself was attentive to the Spirit. The words of Jesus clearly ring home in the life of the early church, “No servant is greater than his master”. Jesus followed the promptings of the Holy Spirit and now His church also does likewise.

The call of every Christian is to be authentic, guided by faith and conformed to the original pattern – Jesus!

Are you willing to live a life that’s extraordinary?

19th May 2022
Readings:
Acts 15: 7-21;
Psalm 96: 1-2a, 2b-3, 10;
John 15: 9-11

Today’s first reading is a continuation of the meeting of the first Council of Jerusalem, convened to decide whether the Gentile converts need to observe the Mosaic Law and Jewish rituals.

It is particularly significant to note the arguments used by the disciples in their debate. There is the mystical experience of Peter, who recounts the story of his call to preach to the Gentiles. Paul and Barnabas describe the miracles, explaining how God had tangibly manifested His power through them, healing the Gentiles. James, in turn, offers evidence from Holy Scripture reminding the others how the prophets said that God would reveal Himself to the Gentiles.

The decision not to impose the law on Gentiles converts was important because no longer would the Gospel remain the precious secret of a few, lucky enough to be born into the faith, but would be shared with everybody, everywhere!

Jesus, in today's Gospel, offers all His followers the joy of living in His love. All we have to do is keep God’s commandments.

17th May 2022

Readings:
Acts 14: 19-28;
Psalm 145: 10-11, 12-13ab, 21;
John 14: 27-31a

As one of His last gifts to the apostles, in today’s Gospel, Jesus gives them His own peace; a peace that will bring them comfort and fortitude during life’s tribulations. We see how true this is in the lives of the apostles thereafter. And even though Paul was not with the other apostles, he would have surely experienced this peace at his conversion. We know this because no matter what he encountered during his missionary journey, he wasn't despondent.

In today’s first reading, we hear of how the Jews from Antioch and Iconium opposed his preaching and tried to turn the people against him. He was even stoned and left for dead. Yet, when he regained consciousness, he courageously walked right back, undeterred! Paul acknowledges that his strength to persevere came from the Lord who was responsible for the success of the mission for He “opened the doors of faith”.

Do I experience the peace of Christ comforting me whenever life tosses me around?

Fifth Sunday in Easter

Readings:
Acts 14: 21-27;
Psalm 145: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13;
Revelation 21: 1-5a;
John 13: 31-33a, 34-35

We all need encouragement, especially in moments of disillusionment. The theme of the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is woven through all three readings today. In the first reading, Paul encourages the converts in Antioch who faced much rejection on account of the faith in Jesus that they professed.

The author in today’s second reading writes to encourage the Early Christians who are downcast after the destruction of the city of Jerusalem. Just as the death of Jesus was followed by His resurrection, the writer offers hope that God will bring about a complete transformation – wiping away their tears and making everything new. And in today’s Gospel narrative which goes back to the time of the passion, we hear Jesus express complete confidence that despite His imminent passion, the Father will glorify Him!

Today’s readings are a reminder to each of us, who choose to follow Jesus, that passion, death and resurrection are inseparable!

St Matthias, Apostle

Readings:
Acts 1: 15-17, 20-26;
Psalm 113: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8;
John 15: 9-17

The su***de of Judas left a void in the apostolic community which needed to be filled. Peter, the chief shepherd, speaks to the disciples who, after praying, select Matthias as the one to fill that void. This is the first instance of ‘apostolic succession’, which forms the basis for the appointment of Bishops in the Church.

The Gospel describes this collegiality in the symbolism of the Vine, which in the Old Testament refers to Israel. John, however, has Jesus replace this imagery with Himself. Thus, Jesus is to humanity what Israel was to the world. Hence, the stress is on “remaining” in Jesus. Judas refused to “remain” in Jesus and withered. Matthias is now called to the same office of “remaining” in Jesus.

While we are all called to “remain” in Jesus and to “bear fruit”, the emphasis of the call remains on Jesus who reminds us, “You did not choose me; I chose you.”

Are you striving to be fruitful in the way that Jesus asks? Come, re-connect and remain in Him.

Our Lady of Fatima

Readings:
Acts 13: 26-33;
Psalm 2: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11ab;
John 14: 1-6

There’s an anonymous quote that speaks of the goal of religion being not to get us to heaven, but to get heaven into us; and Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel precisely spell out how!

Speaking to His disciples Jesus tells them about His departure to the Father. When asked how they too could get to heaven, Jesus says “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” – John 14:6. In other words, belief in Jesus and striving to live as He did, can make heaven a reality here! After all, isn’t this what we pray for in the Lord’s Prayer, that we cooperate in bringing about the kingdom of God here on earth?

This is also what Paul shares with the Gentiles in today’s first reading – to believe in God’s promise of salvation, in the here and now, to all who express belief in Jesus.
