Born Fernando Martin in Portugal to an affluent family, St Anthony’s teachings of the Catholic faith was understood by the most unlettered. In 1224, St Francis of Assisi entrusted his friars’ pursuits of studies to St Anthony. At the time, St Anthony possessed a valuable Book of Psalms comprising notes and comments that helped in teaching students. Later, the book was stolen by a novice who decided to leave the Order. On discovering its loss, St Anthony prayed fervently that the book be found or returned. His prayers were answered! Not only was the book returned to its rightful owner, but also, the thief took an extra step to rejoin the Order.

The Archdiocese of Bombay wishes the parishes in Dharavi, Vakola, Malwani, Mankhurd, Saki Naka, Kalwa, Tembipada and all the Churches and Institutions dedicated to St Anthony, the world over, a Very Happy Feast.

How have working mums adjusted during the pandemic? Here’s what Dinelle Lobo, Co-ordinator, Take Charge, from Mount Carmel's Parish, Bandra (W), has to say about her experience:

“Sometimes, single parenting, even for a few months, is challenging! My husband left for work early this year, wishing him safe travels took on a whole new meaning. With the pandemic and travel restrictions, you never know when you will see your loved ones again. But, one of the things I learnt is that your family will always be there for you. My mum is above 75-years, yet she moved in so that she could help us out. It’s important to be kind to mums! Especially, stay at home mums, and those who work, they have a lot of responsibilities.

These months have been difficult, not being able to meet friends, for kids as well as adults. I genuinely feel distressed for school children. I can see my son struggling. He's so used to being at school, with his friends, studying, running and playing. The pandemic has only increased screen time, with all classes and sports activities moving online. They miss playing in the sunlight, and running in an open ground is only a dream. I wish children can enjoy their freedom again.

On the work-front, relationship with colleagues has become better! Everyone is a bit more understanding and that lightens the workload. And for all of us who wait to meet our siblings, friends and relatives, this year has shown us new ways to cherish them. Earlier this year a close friend moved to a new country, and we would connect every Saturday morning! It helped us to stay in touch and not feel lost.

I missed going for Mass! It’s great that we have so many Masses online, and the Cardinal has brought the teachings of the Catholic faith into our homes. Living through these seven months, one can only thank God for, keeping us and our families safe.

Although there is a constant fear of being infected, one of the nicer things about the lockdown was learning new skills and languages, cooking, baking, and taking up short term courses. I’ve learnt to appreciate life!
I only hope and pray that 2021 will be nothing short of a miracle, we need it!”

Not all superheroes wear capes, most of them battle an invisible threat without real superpowers. Our healthcare workers are the real superheroes of today, armed only with their selfless devotion to duty. In our series ‘COVID Heroes’ we feature individuals who have made our community and society proud by risking their lives for us.

Mary Kolembel, Nurse officer, Lilavati Hospital, Bandra
While many of us have the privilege of working from the comfort of our homes, brave nurses, doctors and many more, are risking their lives to save ours. Mary Kolembel, a Nurse officer at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, positioned in the Operation Theatre, is one of these brave personnel on duty. While the experience of being a nurse, during this pandemic, is scary, because of the ignorance and the lack of awareness, Mary finds it rewarding to see patients being discharged, after a full recovery.
Physical and mental well-being is a challenge during a situation like this, but Mary is thankful for the measures that are being taken by the hospital, to ensure the physical well-being of the personnel, like providing PPEs, transport, food and boarding, all free of cost. For her mental well-being, Mary says, “I strongly believe in Jesus, and I actually keep repeating, ‘I am vaccinated with the Blood of Christ, and no virus can touch me,’ and that gives me strength.”
According to Mary, it is only her Christian values that have sustained and inspired her to help and reach out. While those who have contracted the Corona Virus, usually come in depressed and hopeless, Mary supports them on their road to recovery by doing all that she can.
To further combat the spread of the Corona Virus, Mary has shared health tips that can be put into practice in our everyday routine. She advises us, to sanitise objects of daily use such as keys, footwear, and money after returning home. Another pro tip from this health care professional is to use articles that are washable, especially bags.
During this time of crisis, Mary’s message of hope to the people of the Archdiocese is, “Stay Home, Stay Safe, Be Positive, and we will get through this. Don’t let any small virus destroy you.“
