Did you know the origin of Rathyatra?
Gundicha Yatra is another name for Ratha Yatra. Gundicha was the queen of King Indradyumna, who constructed this enormous temple. Gundicha Yatra is appropriately called after the queen Gundicha. Half a mile and a half separate Gundicha House from the Jagannath shrine. Skanda Purana also mentions Mahavedi or Gundicha Mandapa as Sri Jagannath's birthplace. It was the location where Indradyumna made countless yajnas. Following Indradyumna's yajna, three deities were sculpted in Mahavedi. Lord's Ratha Yatra was unknown, however, when the Nilamadhava was worshipped by the Savaras(tribes). After the completion of the carving of deities, the Ratha Yatra to bring the deities to the Sri mandir was organised.
In the Purushottama Mahatyma, Jagannath promises Indradyumna that he will spend seven days at His birthplace on the bank of Indradyumna Sarovar. Once a year, the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra visit this location. Their voyage begins on the second day of the bright half of the month of Asadha, and they return to the temple on the ninth day after staying here for seven days. . It is claimed that Queen Gundicha persuaded the king to create this event so that sinners and the impoverished untouchables, who were not normally permitted to enter the temple, could have Darshan of Lord Jagannath on His Ratha and therefore gain salvation.Thus, the historic Rath Yatra began somewhere in the Satya Yuga of Svarocisa Manu, the second Manu of fourteen Manus.

Jagannath..Jagat means the moving world. Gacchati iti jagat, Sanskrit word, gacchati means which is moving.
Animate objects are moving, some of the animate objects are standstill, just like trees, but ultimately they are also moving in this sense: that one species of life is being transmigrated to another species of life. Therefore it is called jagat. Jagat means moving. And Jagat-nath, natha means the proprietor—master, proprietor.
So Jagannatha means the proprietor or the master of all these movements, He isJagannath, And Balabhadra, Balaram, bala means strength, and rama means enjoyment. So Balaram means who gives you spiritual strength for enjoying eternal blissful life. He is Balaram. And Subhadra, su means auspicious, and bhadra means well-being. Subhadra, Jagannath and Balaram combined together are present before you to reclaim you all from your miserable condition of life. That is the purport of this Ratha-yatra Festival. People truly devoted to Lord Jagannath are entitled to go to heaven by getting a glimpse of Him on the chariot. People singing the glory of the Lord and dancing to the tunes of his glory, get liberated during this festival. People accompanying the journey of the Lord and chanting ‘Jai Krishna’ up to the Gundicha temple get freed from the cycle of birth and death. The people fanning the deities with flower bouquets or any other kind of fans get liberated by going to Brahmaloka. People who take rounds around the chariots chanting Vishnu Sahasra Nama go to Vaikuntha. The air touching the bodies of the deities gets purified and charged with his blessings. It removes the sins of all life forms. (Skanda Purana)
