Swayambhu Paleshwar Mahadev mandir devasthan is a historic ‘Gramdev’ mandir in marol gaon (village), andheri east, Mumbai. The origins of this temple dates back to the 1500’s, maybe earlier.The Portuguese were in power at that point, and marol is the prime ‘collection’ center (total 34 clusters of villages) for all taxes. This was an agricultural land at that point, and the collectors used to make

their rounds, the temple, due to cultural conflicts, was always in danger. The ‘Paleshwar’ name was derived from the fact that this part of marol was called ‘Paligram’ village. The primary language was ‘Pali’ and “Mori/Modi” (Devnagri) language. Pal is also a name for the ‘yoni’ (female) section of the shivling. The 5 acre ground, next to, and behind the temple premise now (on which the Mumbai metro project is now working on) was once a huge lake. All visitors used to first visit the temple and lake (known for prayer fulfilling powers) pay thier respects, and only then move on with thier business. The Portuguese were naturally neglecting/hostile towards the temple and it’s popularity, and known, historic attempts are recorded of them repeatedly trying to destroy it. This was from the 1500’s to 1600’s, and with the advent of the British rule, to the 1940’s the Auti family took over and restored the premise to an extent. There are many books that have recorded all these incidents. As of today the temple has developed significantly and has within it, is the Paleshwarshivling, Ganapati, Vitthal Rakumai, Ram mandir, Dattatreya, tulsi, a cowshed, and a Ram setu floating stone (from Rameshwar)
