Many people from the righteous predecessors (salaf) were known to take advantage of their time and cautious about how to spend it.

The following are some examples illustrating the high level of appreciation that the righteous predecessors gave to time.

It has been reported that a man once said to ‘Amir Ibn ‘Abdu’lQais: ‘Converse with me.’ ‘Amir replied: ‘[Only if you could] hold the sun’ [i.e. stop the time so that i can talk with you].

Praising Allah in the midst of Calamity

One of the Salaf said, “When I am afflicted with calamity, I praise Allāh four times: I praise Allāh for it not being worse than it is, I praise Allāh for nourishing me with the ability to bear it patiently, I praise Him for granting me the accord to say, ‘To Allāh we belong and to Him we return,’ and I praise Him for not making the tribulation in my religion.”

Looking to relief through patience is an act of worship since tribulation never remains forever.

Patiently bear every calamity, take heart,

Know that harm never endures forever.

Be patient, just as the nobles were patient:

It is a fleeting event; here today, gone tomorrow.

If the most severely afflicted person were to be dipped but once in the bliss of Paradise and then asked, “Have you ever seen calamity?” He will reply, “My Lord, no!” [1]

O soul, patience only for a few days!

Their length? A few flitting dreams!

O soul, pass through this world quickly;

Turn away from it, true life lies ahead!

Another said,

It is only an hour, then it will depart

All of this will go, it will disappear.

Speaking on the essentials of human greatness wonders, the historian Lamar Tine states:
..If greatness of purpose, smallness of means and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history than Muhammad.

..I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion, which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence, which can make itself appeal to every age.

Professor Hurgronje:-
..The fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations.

ANNIE BESANT:-
..It is impossible for anyone who studies the life & character of the great Prophet of Arabia, …., to feel anything but reverence for that mighty Prophet, one of the great messengers of the Supreme.

Comprehensive dua

للَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا سَأَلَكَ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَاذَ بِهِ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ كُلَّ قَضَاءٍ قَضَيْتَهُ لِي خَيْرًا

O Allaah! I ask You for all good: that which is in the present and that which is in the future, that which I know from it and that which I do not know; and I seek refuge with You from all evil: that which is in the present and that which is in the future, that which I know from it and that which I do not know.

O Allaah! I ask You for the good that Your servant and Your Prophet asked you for! And I seek refuge with You from the evil that Your servant and Your Prophet sought Your refuge from.

O Allaah! I ask You for Paradise and whatever draws someone closer to it from sayings and actions; and I seek Your refuge from the Fire and from what draws someone closer to it from sayings and actions; and I ask You that you make every decree which You ordain for me good

Allahumma inni as’aluka minal-khayri kullihi, ‘ajilihi wa ajilihi, ma ‘alimtu minhu wa ma la a’lam. Wa a’udhu bika minash-sharri kullihi, ‘ajilihi wa ajilihi, ma ‘alimtu minhu wa ma la a’lam.

Allahumma inni as’aluka min khayri ma sa’alaka ‘abduka wa nabiyyuka, wa a’udhu bika min sharri ma ‘adha bihi ‘abduka wa nabiyyuka. Allahumma inni as’alukal-jannatah wa ma qarrab ilayha min qawlin aw ‘amalin, wa a’udhu bika minan-nari wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw ‘amalin,

wa as’aluka an taj’al kulla qada’in qadaytahuli khayran

IMAAM IBN MAAJAH -rahimahullaah- reported in his ‘Sunan’ (The Book of Supplication: Chapter [4] Comprehensive Supplication: no. 3846):

“Aboo Bakr ibn Abee Shaybah narrated to us, saying: `Affaan narrated to us, saying: Hammaad ibn Salamah narrated to us, saying: Jabr ibn Habeeb related to me: from Umm Kulthoom bint Abee Bakr: from `Aa·ishah: that Allaah’s Messenger taught her this supplication. -Declared ‘Saheeh’ by Shaikh al-Albaanee -rahimahullaah.
