St Joseph's Church - Goregaon East

St Joseph's Church - Goregaon East St. Joseph Parish Community was born on 12th December 1988, with the Oblates of St. Joseph, being the first shepherds of the community. May St.

Since then, the community has grown from a few hundred to nearly two thousand catholics. The area of our parish is quite vast and covers a newer part of the suburbs of Mumbai. The quaint situation of our parish community is that we have no Church building and Parish house as yet. Our liturgical services and meetings are held at the nearyby Convent of St. Joseph, which is run by the Congregation of

the Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception ( CONFHIC). The two parish fathers live in a rented apartment, which is situated within a short distance of the Convent Chapel. This premises also serves as a Parish Office and meeting place for parishioners. As you browse through these pages, we hope you come to know a little more about our parish community, which is "the living Church". We solicit your prayers and support in our endeavour to build a Church and Rectory. Joseph, our Patron, bless you and your own.

Timothy & Titus

The introductory sentence of the first reading offers us a comprehensive summary of the long readings of the day. The prophet Nathan reminds king David to ‘listen’ to the voice of God, for what David desires for God is not what God needs of him! And Jesus, through the parable of the sower, explains how we fail to fully understand God’s Word when we do not listen rightly.

Listening to God goes beyond mere ‘hearing’; it involves the proper disposition of one’s entire being, so that what is heard is rightly understood and interpreted. If one is not rightly disposed, then what is heard is not fully understood and perhaps even misinterpreted and misrepresented.

Timothy and Titus, the saints we honour today, were both involved listeners of God’s Word. They worked alongside St Paul, sometimes as interpreters or as secretaries; at times going ahead of Paul to prepare the people or remaining behind to further catechize and confirm the new converts.

To ‘listen’ to God’s voice, you would need to turn down the surround sound!

On this, the last day of the year, the readings speak of both - the beginning of the world and the last days.

Today’s Gospel explains that Jesus is eternal (existing from the very beginning and for all time) because He is God’s Word. It was for a brief period in human history that God’s Word became flesh (in Jesus) and the light of truth exposed the darkness of sin that existed in the world. After His ascension, Jesus may not be physically present, but His Word continues to illumine the world and abides with those who choose to walk in the truth.

On a cautionary note, the first reading tells us that there are those who prefer to remain in the darkness for fear that the light of truth will expose their sin. They are the ‘anti-Christs’ and those who are overshadowed by their influence will surely witness the last days!

As we step into the New Year, may we fan the flame of truth abiding in us through His Word, so that we may always walk in light.

Christmas

A little boy, seeing an airplane fly over for the first time in his life, asked his father what it was. His father explained that it helped take people from one place to another. To this, the child asked again, “But daddy how do people climb up to the sky to get into planes?” His father smiled and explained that people don’t need to climb into the sky to get into the planes; the planes come down from the sky so that people may get in.

This beautifully illustrates the mystery of Christmas – a celebration of the ‘incarnation’. I don’t have to climb into the skies to get to God. God comes down to earth to me!

Have I met Him yet?

The people of Israel longed for a Messiah to redeem, gather and protect them. This longing is echoed in the Canticle sung by Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah. It tells of the coming of the Messiah, from the house of David, who would be victorious in fulfilling the prophesies of the Old Testament.
Having suffered greatly under Roman occupation, the people wanted the Messiah to look and behave like a king – triumphant in his entry, proud and commanding - who would silence their foes and restore the covenant made to Abraham.
However, Zechariah’s Canticle heralds the coming of Jesus not as the king that the people of Israel anticipated, but as one who would bring God’s mercy and love to the world.
The Gospel invites us to make known this mercy that ‘shines on those who are in darkness and guides our feet in the way of peace’.
