To this day, a sacred place associated with Sage Vishwamitra exists at Bisol, a name believed to be a linguistic transformation of “Vishwamitra.” This site is traditionally identified as Vishwamitra Ashram (Bisol), preserving the living memory of the great sage’s presence in the region.

The continuity of this tradition reflects how Ramayana geography lives on through names, folklore, and devotion, linking present-day Mithila with the timeless narrative of Shri Ram’s journey.

As described in the Valmiki Ramayana, the ashram of Gautam Rishi was situated in a lush orchard of Mithila. It was here that Ahilya lived in the form of a stone statue, awaiting liberation. This sacred place is identified today as Ahiyari, a revered Ramayana-era site located about 25 km west–north of Darbhanga.

Tradition holds that this area was once a Tapovan (forest of penance). Even today, the sanctity of that ancient Tapovan is preserved through four ashrams positioned in the four directions, associated with revered sages:

Yagnavalkya (Jagvan)

Shringi (Singiya)

Bhringi / Bhairava

Gautam Rishi

These living traditions affirm Ahiyari’s identity as a spiritual nucleus of Mithila. Devotees continue to visit the site with deep reverence to seek the blessings of Ahilya, remembering the ideals of penance, patience, and divine grace.

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Vishwamitra, along with Shri Ram and Lakshman, crossed the holy River Ganga and spent the night at Vishala City. This ancient city is identified in the present-day Vaishali district, situated on the banks of the Ganga.

Local belief holds that the trio crossed the Ganga from this very spot and also took a sacred bath here, sanctifying the place forever. The site is traditionally known as Ramchoura Temple.

The name “Chaura” comes from the Bhojpuri word meaning “orchard”, suggesting that this sacred area may once have been a lush orchard where the divine halt took place. Over centuries, the memory of that sacred stay transformed into a revered place of worship.

The name Parev is believed to be a distorted form of “Paraav”, which means a temporary resting place or halt. Local tradition holds that Shri Ram, Lakshman, and the great sage Vishwamitra had established their temporary rest house at this very place during their sacred journey.

This location lies near the Koilwar Bridge on the River Sonbhadra and is an important waypoint on the Ramayana Yatra Marg. At a short distance from Parev stands the revered Mohaneshwar Mahadev Temple, further enhancing the site’s Shaiv and spiritual importance.

Some local traditions also believe that the divine trio crossed the River Sonbhadra from Trigna Ghat, which is situated at a distance of approximately 5 km from Parev. Together, these locations form a connected sacred landscape associated with Shri Ram’s journey after Siddhashram.

This belief aligns with the narrative of the Valmiki Ramayana, which describes the movement of Shri Ram under the guidance of Vishwamitra after completing the duties at Siddhashram. The crossing of rivers marks an important transition in the Ramayana Yatra, symbolizing progress toward greater divine missions.

During archaeological excavations at Trigna Ghat, very ancient idols were discovered, strengthening the belief that this site was inhabited and revered since ancient times. These findings add historical depth to the spiritual significance of the ghat.

Trigna Ghat is located at a distance of approximately 8 km from the present-day bridge, and continues to be respected by locals as a sacred river crossing point connected with the Ramayana era.

Aharoli village, located about 3 km east of Buxar, derives its name from Ahilya and holds immense spiritual significance in the Ramayana tradition. The word Aharoli is believed to have evolved from “Ahilya”, preserving the memory of a divine event etched into sacred history.

It is widely believed that Shri Ram performed Ahilya Uddhaar—liberating Ahilya from her curse—at this very place. This act restored Ahilya to her original divine form and reaffirmed Shri Ram’s role as the redeemer and upholder of dharma.

According to Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, Shri Ram accomplished Ahilya Uddhaar immediately after leaving Siddhaashram, even before crossing the Ganga or Sonebhadra rivers. Based on this description, scholars and devotees believe that Aharoli corresponds to the same sacred location mentioned in the Manas.

This holy site is traditionally identified with Gautam Ashram, associated with Gautam Rishi, the husband of Ahilya. The ashram stands as a symbol of penance, forgiveness, and divine grace.

Ramrekha Ghat is a renowned palace–ghat complex situated on the holy banks of the River Ganga in Buxar. Deeply revered in Ramayana tradition, this sacred place is associated with multiple divine visits of Shri Ram.

It is believed that after slaying Tadaka, Shri Ram took a holy bath at Ramrekha Ghat, purifying himself in the sacred waters of the Ganga. Scriptures and local tradition state that Shri Ram visited this place twice.

Later, after his coronation as King of Ayodhya, Shri Ram returned to this sacred site to perform a Yagna. In a remarkable divine act, he is believed to have drawn the outline of the Yagna platform using the tip of his arrow—an act that gave this ghat its revered name “Ram Rekha” (the sacred line of Ram).
