(Upāsanā Kāṇḍa)__
_Jñeyaṁ yat tat pravakṣyāmi yajjñātvā’mritam aśnute |
Anādimat paraṁ brahma na sat tan nāsad ucyate ||_
*(Shrimad Bhagavad Gita 13.13)*
*Word-meaning:*
_Yat jñeyam, yat jñātvā amritam aśnute, tat pravakṣyāmi. Tat anādimat param brahma na sat, na asat ucyate._
- I shall now declare that which is to be known, knowing which one attains immortality: That beginningless supreme Brahman is said to be neither “existent” nor “non-existent”.
*Discourse:*
See, _‘yat jñeyaṁ’_ - that which will be known through the means like humility etc.; it is known by the _‘Tattvamasi’_ etc. sentences, but only after the ripening of these means. That is, without these means, knowledge that gives liberation cannot arise from the great sentence. _‘Tat pravakṣyāmi’_ - about that knowable, I, Shri Krishna, shall _‘prakarṣeṇa vakṣyāmi’_ i.e., expound elaborately. One is mere statement, another is discourse. Statement is just saying something; discourse is explaining all necessary details about it. Bhagavan says, here I will not merely state the knowable, I will expound it elaborately. Because by ordinary talk that inaccessible Truth will remain unknown.
That which cannot be told by words has to be indicated through words. Paramatma cannot be told by any word, and yet it has to be indicated through words. Therefore unless _prakarṣa_ is done in explaining the Truth, it cannot be told. To induce the listener’s interest, the fruit is given first: _‘yajjñātvā amritam aśnute’_ - knowing it, immortality is attained. This is _phalashruti_ - after knowing it, death is not attained again. There are many kinds of death - loss of wealth, loss of people - these are also called death. After knowing it, no kind of death occurs, no loss can ever happen. Because all losses, all damages are in the upādhis. The upahita is never lost. Since beginningless time, countless upādhis have come and gone over it, but just as water appearing in sand for a thousand years never wets a single grain of sand, similarly since beginningless time all upādhi-appearances have been on the Pratyagātma, but the Pratyagātma remains pure as ever, never has any impurity come in it. Therefore by the coming and going of upādhis it does not die. Nothing of it is ever destroyed. Death belongs to the non-Self. Therefore one who knows the Atma separate from them, never dies again, never suffers separation from anything. Why? Because _‘saṁyogā viprayogāntāḥ’_ - whatever is joined will be separated. Only what is gained can be lost. The Atma-tattva, being non-dual and indivisible, can never be joined to anything, because nothing else exists apart from it. If there is no union, how can there be separation? Therefore _‘amritatvam aśnute’_ - here _‘aśnute’_ means ‘attains’; but here ‘attaining’ does not mean gaining a new immortality. It only means manifestation. Like we kept a watch inside the cupboard, next day searched, didn’t find. After two days while shaking clothes it fell out with a _khat_. The watch was always in the cupboard, but what does a person say? ‘Oh! the lost watch was found.’ It was neither lost nor found, it was always there. But because we thought it lost, we say ‘found’. Similarly the Pratyagātma is always immortal, but due to ignorance we imagined death in it; that imagination is removed, so it is said one attains immortality.
About that knowable, first it is said _‘anādimat’_ - that which has a beginning is _ādimat_, that which has no beginning is _anādimat_. _Ādimat_ means having a beginning. _Anādimat_ means having no beginning. This word feels odd because in Sanskrit grammar, when a Bahuvrīhi compound serves, _matup_ suffix is not added. ‘Anādi’ itself means ‘that which has no beginning’, so why add _matup_ and say _anādimat_? Therefore some say it should be understood as _‘anādi mat-param brahma’_ - _mat_ became Vāsudeva form. That whose supreme power is Vāsudeva is _mat-para_, that Brahman is beginningless. Āchārya Śaṅkara says such word-arrangement is proper only if _‘arthashcet sambhavati’_ - if a coherent meaning comes out. But the meaning that would come from this word-division is not coherent. Why? The instruction about Paramatma is by negation of all attributes. The Truth is taught only by denying all particularities. If we describe it by attributes, by power, then the meaning gets spoiled, it will no longer be the intended knowable. What has power, qualities can be upāsya, not jñeya. Because the knowable is further said _‘na sat tan nāsad ucyate’_ - it cannot be called ‘it is’ or ‘it is not’. In one sentence to show it has the specific Vāsudeva-power-form, and then by _‘na sat tan nāsad ucyate’_ to negate the specific - this is improper. Therefore even though Bahuvrīhi would suffice, Bhagavan added _matup_ just to complete the syllables for the meter. He could have said _‘anādi paraṁ brahma’_ but then the meter would break, so He said _anādimat_. Hence taking it as separate words _‘mat-param’_ is not correct.
_Ādi_ means cause; what comes first is cause. That which is cause of all, how can it have a cause! If you make a cause of the cause of all, then there will be infinite regress. The cause of all is cause-less, it has no cause. What is it like? _‘Na sat ucyate’_ - the knowable cannot be said to ‘be’. What is known by pramāṇas is called ‘is’. Bread is. Bread is seen by the eye, eaten by the mouth. Only that which is known by means of knowledge i.e., senses, mind, intellect, as ‘is’, is called _sat_. One cannot say ‘is’ of _Is-ness_ itself! One cannot say Brahman is sat. To say Brahman is, is like saying ‘is is’. That in which _is-ness_ exists is called _sat_ or ‘is’. _Is-ness_ means existence; in which pot, cloth it exists, that is called ‘pot is, cloth is’. _Is-ness_ itself does not have existence, so how can it be called ‘is’. In pot there is _is-ness_, so pot can be called ‘is’. Similarly if Brahman had _is-ness_ then it could be called ‘is’. Brahman does not have _is-ness_. _Is-ness_ is only in Vāsudeva - _kṛṣir bhūvācakaḥ śabdo ṇaśca nirvṛtivācakaḥ | tayor aikyam paraṁ brahma kṛṣṇa ityabhidhīyate ||_ (Gopāla Tāpinī Upaniṣad). Therefore it is said _‘na tat sat’_. See, whatever is not _sat_ is _asat_. Either a thing is, or is not. Only these two are famous in the world. But Bhagavan says _‘na asat tad ucyate’_ - ‘it is not’ also cannot be said. Cannot say ‘is’, cannot say ‘is not’. Cannot say ‘is not’ because ‘not-is-ness’ exists in a thing, then we call it ‘is not’. In _Is-ness_ there is no ‘not-is-ness’. Since _Is-ness_ has neither ‘is-ness’ nor ‘not-is-ness’, it can be called neither _sat_ nor _asat_ - i.e., pure Existence.
_Sat-asat_ can also be understood as manifest-unmanifest, or effect-cause. Those meanings can also be taken, but that alone won’t work. Here only ‘is-ness’ and ‘not-is-ness’ must be taken; Brahman cannot be described by them.
Āchārya raises a question: With great emphasis you declared ‘I will explain the knowable well’, and now you say ‘neither is nor is not, this is all that can be said’. So what did you say about it? Nothing!
He Himself answers: _‘anurūpam eva uktam’_ - He said appropriately, correctly. This is the only way to indicate Brahman, there is no other way. This is why Upaniṣad, while telling the knowable Brahman, says _‘neti neti’_ - not this, not this:
_‘asthūlam ananu ahrasvam’_ (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad)
- That Parabrahman is neither gross/heavy/big, nor subtle/tiny/atom, nor short/small in stature.
Not gross, not atom, not short - by negating all attributes only can it be indicated. Why? Because it is always beyond speech, not an object of speech:
_Yasyāmatam tasya matam matam yasya na veda saḥ_ (Kena Upaniṣad)
- He who thinks Brahman cannot be known by mind and intellect, he truly knows it. But he who thinks arrogantly ‘I have fully known Brahman’, he truly does not know it.
Therefore whatever is an object of speech, when all that is negated, what remains, what cannot be negated, that substratum alone is Brahman. It seems a strange thing that the knowable is not said with ‘is’. If it is, only then it is called knowable. If it is to be negated, it would be said as ‘is not’. Say neither ‘is’ nor ‘is not’ - then what kind of knowable is it? The question arises because our intellect is formed such that through ‘is-not-is’ concepts only we know everything. So we feel the knowable must be an object of ‘is’ or ‘not-is’ concept. But consider: knowledge through ‘is-not-is’ concepts happens of what? Of what can be perceived by senses. What you know through senses, through pramāṇas like perception, you know it as either ‘is’ or ‘is not’. But Parameshwar is beyond senses, therefore He is known neither by ‘is’ concept nor ‘not-is’ concept. He is not an object of perception pervaded by ‘is’ and ‘not-is’ concepts, because He is not perceptible by senses. Only what is an object of senses is pervaded by ‘is-not-is’ concepts. Brahman is not like that, therefore _‘na sat tan nāsad ucyate’_ - this alone can be said about Him.
Since He is not an object of senses, He is knowable only by scriptural testimony. There is no other means apart from _śabda_ to know Paramatma.
_‘Pramātā ca pramāṇaṁ ca prameyo niścitistathā |
Yatsānnidhyāt prasiddhyanti tatsiddhī kim apekṣate ||’_
- Knower, means of knowledge, object of knowledge, and certainty - all these are established only by whose presence. What other proof is needed to establish that Atma/consciousness?
Whether pramāṇa, pramātā, prameya, or _niścitih_ i.e., cognition - all these shine only by the light of that Paramatma, i.e., they function depending on Paramatma which is non-different from Pratyagātma. Therefore pramāṇa, prameya etc. have a beginning. When I saw with the eye, eye became pramāṇa. When I saw, I became pramātā. When I saw pot, pot became prameya. All these have a beginning. But that by whose light, by whose being all these arose, can have no beginning. Therefore it is said that which is beyond both sat and asat is _‘anādimat’_ - it has no cause, it always exists. Whatever is produced by a cause has a beginning. That which always is, never ‘was’, never ‘will be’, how can it have a beginning? Intellect cannot grasp it, yet it always is. It does not depend on cause, everything depends on it. That is Para Brahman. Thus Bhagavan briefly fulfilled the vow He made.
When Parabrahman is described in this way, people often take it as _śūnya/void_! Many scholars also fall into this illusion that Advaita is Vedic version of Buddhist _śūnyavāda_! But Paramatma is not void. First, He is Pratyagātma, always shining as ‘I’, His negation is impossible. Second, He is the impeller of senses and mind, by His power they function, so not void. Third, He gives existence and knowledge to the world. If He were void, the world would appear void, and knowledge of world would not exist. Fourth, He is the ruler of the world; without His administration the world cannot continue in order.
Due to above reasons Paramatma cannot be void. At the start Bhagavan explains that through the senses and mind of all beings that Parabrahman alone is known. Because He is perceived with upādhis, we cannot say He is not. That is, though not sayable as sat-asat, there is a way to know Him: with upādhi His presence is accessible to all. Thus the doubt of voidness is removed. Knowing His upādhi-less form gives immortality, so just knowing Him with upādhi is not enough, but knowing Him with upādhi removes the possibility of voidness, gives a place for discriminative knowledge, and gives attainment of immortality.
That which is to be known by every seeker of welfare, knowing which a being attains immortality, is that beginningless ‘Tat’ denoted supreme consciousness to be known. It is not called ‘is’ and ‘is not’. About this Paramatma, Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad says:
_Om tad brahma. Om tad vāyuḥ. Om tad ātmā. Om tat satyam. Om tat sarvam. Om tat puro-namaḥ ||
Antaś carati bhūteṣu guhāyāṁ viśvamūrtiṣu |
Tvaṁ yajñas tvaṁ vaṣaṭkāras tvam indras tvaṁ rudras tvaṁ viṣṇus tvaṁ brahmā tvaṁ prajāpatiḥ ||
Tvaṁ tad āpa āpo jyotir raso’mritaṁ brahma bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar om ||_
(Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad, Anuvāka 68, Mantra 2 / Taittirīya Āraṇyaka 10.68.1)
- That Paramatma alone is Brahman, He alone is Vāyu, He alone is the Jīvātma, He alone is the ultimate Truth, and this entire visible-invisible universe is He. That Supreme Person resides as inner-controller in the cave of the heart of all beings, and the entire universe is His form. O Lord! You alone are sacrifice, You alone are Vaṣaṭkāra, You alone are Indra, You alone are Rudra, You alone are Viṣṇu, You alone are Brahmā, and You alone are Prajāpati. You alone are water, light, essence, immortal Brahman, pervading the three worlds Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ as Om.
Shivam bhūyāt.
