Gujaratis came to madurai nearly in the early 20th century where they used to trade for Textiles as they are know experts in it as well as construction work. In late 1963 shree madura gujarati samaj was established for the welfare of the gujarati peoples residing not only in madurai but also for those who come to the TEMPLE CITY to visit the infamous SREE MEENAKSHI SUNDARESHWAR TEMPLE and the RAMA

NATHSWAMY TEMPLE in RAMESWARAM. Currently in the year 2009 the organisation had taken up with expanding with lodging and canteen facilities for the people who come from long distances to visit the temple town and serve them with authenticated home made gujarati food. The Samaj has a 3 floor building & houses two halls of about 1900 sq. each in the ground and I floor. The Second floor has a Guest House(lodging) & the terrace has a Canteen for providing Gujarati breakfast, Lunch & dinner. The guest house is accessible with a lift. open to the sky portico in the front of the building provides a facility for the members of samaj for games and get together. The samaj also has a LIBRARY which has nearabout 1500 collection of gujarati books.
