YOGA FOR SELF HEALING

– By Chandraprakash Singh (Founder & Trustee Shri Sai Baba Mandir, Lucknow)

Long ago on 26 Jan,1994, at around 6:00 PM, lying in my bed helplessly wrapped with worldly worries, I felt my leg muscles loosening the grip. Being the father of three little girls and an husband of a beautiful and sick lady , I was alarmed . So I immediately jumped out of my bed and drove to a Book Shop. On the very face value I liked a book ‘Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar’ and purchased to read , understand and practice Yoga. I penned down the date and time of the incidence on the book, that book even today is with me.
From that very moment, I started my journey on the path of practicing, understanding and assimilating YOGA. During this long course of my journey I went through several books on the subject, specially Yoga Sutra by Muni Patanjali, listened to several teachers on Yoga and picked up the tips I found useful. In the meantime, I translated Patanjali Yoga Sutra from Sanskrit to Hindi and English languages.
I did practice yoga as learnt and realized the changes in my body, mind and the self. Now I am happily ready to share my experience among the people who are in need to know the Yoga.
So let us start Yoga for the self.

The First Stage:

1- May sit in any comfortable posture (SUKHAASAN).(Though I will suggest Trikonasan for females and Siddhaasan for males .) Comfortable means the posture of sitting should be pleasurable.
2- Straighten your spine to keep it in its natural shape.
3- Put both hands on your knees, both palms upside and the points of thumbs touching the points of the first fingers.
4- Relax, meaning thereby from toes to head no cell of the body remains tense .

5- Now start conscious breathing slow, long and deep ,counting 1,2,3…….10. in and out.

6- Follow the route and function of the inhaled and exhaled air.

7- It fills the lungs, comes in contact with the blood circulated by the heart, transfers the oxygen and takes back useless gasses from it to exhale.

8- That is why while inhaling we feel cool air touching the lower inner surface of the nose and while exhaling hot air touching the upper inner surface of the nose.

The Second Stage:

In the second stage breathing should a bit faster than that in the first stage and count up to 20. Rest as above.

The third stage:
In the third stage breathing should be a bit faster than that in the second stage and count up to 20 only.

Then stop breathing and look unto your heart beats , its regularity and the speed ,as long as you can . By and by it will slow down to sooth your mind , body and the soul. This cessation of inhalation and exhalation of breathing is termed “ KEVAL KUMBHAK”, the turning point from worldly to spiritual sphere of life.

My first visit to Shirdi as a beggar.
It is true that I used to visit Shirdi with my father-in -law, Dr. L. S. Chauhan, a staunch devotee of Shri Sai Baba, not as a devotee but as a tourist visitor from 1977. But in 1982 crumbled by my destiny, I became a beggar turned devotee while standing in front of the Lord with folded hands and a firm determination that if our prayers are heard we will remain in His service till the last breath of the present life span.
Again I assured Him that if otherwise our prayers are not listened owing to very deep destiny even then we shall continue to visit Shirdi as a visitor but not a devotee. My trusted colleague Mr. Aum Prakash Misra accompanied me in this to and frow journey. His comments still I remember,” You have been a different person all through the journey”. It happens so when any one is totally engrossed to achieve his mission.
BABA listened my prayers and fulfilled my seven years long wish. Shri Sai always does so, when any soul shredding its ego, surrenders unto His feet, like Draupadi a character in Mahabharat Epic unto Lord Krishna. It was the birth of Aditi Singh my eldest daughter in 1982, now managing trustee of the Board of Trustees, Shri Sai Baba Karma Yoga Bhakti Jnana Samsthan, J 44, Ashiyana Colony, Lucknow. Presently a popular name in Folks Wagon, a German Automobile Co. she is, stationed in Mumbai Maharashtra by the grace of Shri Sai Baba. I prayed to Baba for one child but Baba blessed us two more daughters, Devika working, as Vice President in an American Chemical Industry Exon Mobil, stationed in Bangaluru and Dr. Malavika Singh, working as Project Manager in an N.G.O. UMMID in Mumbai.
As per my commitment even now I am a beggar, not for self, but for His devotees. I will be working in the service of Shri Sai as such, till my last breath.

The Life style and behaviour of SAI BABA---
The life style of Shri Sai was a unique mixture of Hindu and Muslim cultures. The devotees of almost all the religions visited Shirdi and he treated them equally. He never preached any religious dogma, never asked for any one’s religious belief and always encouraged visitors to follow the right path of living. He never spoke against any religious faith He surpassed all religions.
Most of the time he lived in a mosque named by him Dwarika Mai, Dwarika being the place of Lord Krishna. He celebrated Ramanavami, a prominent Hindu festival, with Ram-Kirtan. The same night he allowed the Sandal procession of Muslims too. If he was a Muslim his ears were pierced like followers of Nath Sampradaya, if a Hindu he always uttered Allah Malik and liked verses of Kuran to be pronounced by anyone. In the mosque bhajan-kirtan went on with bells and the conch. Fire in the Dhuni was fed with wood logs by Shri Sai himself against Muslim traditions. If he was a Muslim why was he worshipped by the qualified Brahmins.

Who so ever came to meet him in Shirdi, after Darshan, shredding the ego, he prostrated unto the feet of Shri Sai. He practiced difficult yogic postures too against Muslim traditions. It was people’s faith that Shri Sai was God Incarnate, above all the religions, casts or creeds. His mission, to appear on the earth, was to eradicate the animosity amidst the people of different religions. Anyone is at liberty to waste one’s time and money in tracing the religious faith and whereabout of Shri Sai, but in vain.
Shri Sai Nath was omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. Hundreds of incidents narrated in shri Sai Satcharitra written by Pt. Govindrao Raghunath Dabholkar and so many other literatures reflect above mentioned powers of Shri SAI. For details one may go through those books.
In the Indian philosophy Yoga Shastra is one of the six shastras to realise the Truth, that is God. Shri Sai Nath was seen occasionally practicing very rare yogic practices.

Khand Yoga-
The most difficult and almost unbelievable yogic kriya is Khand yoga, but Shri Sai Nath occasionally performed it very successfully. In the 7th chapter of Shri Sai Satcharita it has been elaborated as to how Shri Sai was seen performing Khand Yoga and Dhoti-Poti etc. rare yogic activities. I have not read or heard of any other Yogi performing these rare yogic activities, except YOGESHWAR. But Shri Sai Nath, God Incarnate, did practice. While practicing Khand Yoga he separated hands and legs etc. from the trunk. Once a spectator was terrified on seeing such a scene, so thought that some wicked person must have killed Shri Sai. He became worried to see parts of the body scattered in the four corners of the mosque in the midnight hour. But out of fear of being implicated himself he could not tell anybody. He ran away. Doubts and fears crowded his mind. So once again, at dawn, he went to see the scene. But finding Shri Sai sitting in his place hale and hearty, he began to wonder whether it was a dream.
Dhoti Poti-
Likewise, Dhoti-Poti, a yogic practice, was done by Shri Sai Nath usually in secluded place. Far away from the people, he would go a secluded place at the well, take a bath and then fetch out his intestines through the mouth to wash inside out and hang upon the branch of a guava tree to get it dried. It is a rare yogic practice performed by the ancient Indian saints to realise God. Therefore it is evident that Shri Sai Nath had mastered Yoga Darshan one of the six Darshan Shastras of Sanatan Dharma. By practicing such yogic practices he could cleanse his body and mind so much so that he became one with God. He was seen talking to some unseen powers in the sky, standing in front of Chavadi after Palanquin procession from Dwarika Mai mosque to Chavadi, an abundant community building.
All pervading-
Shri Sai Nath was omnipotent omnipresent and omniscient. He knew all the activities happening all over the world. Once, he could see that an infant child slipped into a smith’s forge from the armpit of his mother, at some place away from Shirdi. Instantly Shri Sai put his hands into the fire of Dhuni to save the child and that child was indeed saved from the fire, although hands of Shri Sai were scorched. When his spectator devotees on the spot queried the cause, Shri Sai Nath himself explained. After sometime mother of the child too came to Shirdi to express her gratitude.
One Mr. Nana Chandorkar was shifting from Nandaurpur to Pandharpur due to his transfer at the post of Mamlatdar. Hardly he might have reached the border of Nimgaon, a miracle happened in Shirdi. Shri Sai, who was in the mosque talking to his devotees, suddenly started singing a bhajan followed by others sitting there showing great enthusiasm,
I have to go to Pandharpur, I have to go.
Therein I have to stay, therein I have to stay.
Therein is my Lords home.
In the meantime Nana Chandorkar reached Shirdi with all his belongings and the family to go to Pandharpur. When the devotees gathered there told Nana about the prescience of his arrival, he prostrated upon the feet of Shri Sai.

A journey Shirdi;
I along with three friends started our journey from Lucknow to Shirdi for Darshan of Shri Saibaba by train. We boarded the 2class sleeper of Pushpak train. It was the month of October, 1980.On the way one of us purchased a magazine but in hurry to board the train could not make payment to the vendor. Listen carefully to what happened in Shirdi. One of the team members became victim of pickpocketing two times in a day leaving us short of money. Now we were capable to pay the Hotel bills and make return journey. It was an apt lesson of cheating for not paying the cost of magazine to the vender. I was stunned.
Then the miracle, the real one, occurred. For three days we stayed in the hotel but after checking out the waiter fetched the bills for two days only. Repeatedly I got the bills checked at the reception counter, once through the waiter and second time by myself. I was forced by my friends to leave the reception counter when they pulled me back. It was shaving about Rs. 4000. The same we used for purchasing Baba’s photos, lockets and keyrings etc. This was the grace of Shri Sai Nath to strengthen our faith unto his feet. But the Leela of Shri Sai Nath was completed when while returning to Lucknow at the same station the same vender rushed to us asking for the unpaid money , cost of the magazine. Again I was stunned and laughed at God incarnate Shri Sai as to how much pain He takes to show the path of righteousness to his devotees.

THE GRACE
OF
SHRI SAI NATH

It’s human nature to speak of or write about whom he adores. I adore Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi. For me He is God Incarnate. Untouched by affliction, action, result and desires God is the universal consciousness permeating all the material world, immovable or movable. He descends upon the earth, whenever and wherever social harmony is imbalanced, righteousness is diminished and people start behaving at their will disrespecting universal social commands, to teach them the lessons of humanity, love and kindness. So, God descended in the form of Shri Sai in SHIRDI amidst prevailing religious intolerance in the society and the political turmoil in the country.
Shri Sai Sachcharita written by Late Govind R. Dabholkar in its’ 4th chapter speaks of the first appearance of Shri Sai in the village Shirdi district Ahmednagar, Maharashtra at a tender age of just 16 years beneath a Neem tree. This very tree was named by the devotees as Gurusthaan later on. At such tender age, he was Enlightened [Brahmajnani] and absolutely Renunciate [Tyagi], so much so that even in dreams he had no sensual desires. Emancipation rolled upon his feet. An elderly lady, Nana Chopdar’s mother, usually spoke of the wonderful day to day activities and the behaviour of Shri Sai, when he first of all appeared in this village called Shirdi. At that time when this fair, sweet and very handsome boy was first of all seen, he was sitting calmly in deep meditation under the Neem tree. People were quite amazed to see this charming youth performing rigorous austerity at the tender age. Even blistering heat and severe cold made no difference to him. People from around rushed to take a glimpse of this tender, young and charming Yogi. At nights he wandered fearlessly in the barren lands like a vagabond and during the day he sat in meditation, speaking to none. People were mystified to look at the tender, sweet and youthful countenance. Apparently he carried such a youthful countenance, but indeed Shri Sai was Renunciate Incarnate, as if God Incarnate.
An amazing incident occurred one day during this period. Near the Neem tree, where Shri Sai used to sit in yogic posture performing Samadhi, some people were possessed by KHANDOBA the deity of Shirdi. When questioned by the people as to who this young yogi was, he directed them to dig the place and said that here this young yogi has passed 12 years in penance. After digging the surface underneath the ground a cell [ in a cave] was found closed by a stone on its entrance. After removing the stone four metal lamps were found in burning state. The floor of the cell was made of limestone. It contained a wooden seat and upon it a Gomukhi with a beautiful rosary. The people were wonder struck as to how it was possible that beneath the ground in the closed cell lamps were burning. Then Shri Sai told them, “This is the place of my Guru and my sacred legacy; so please close it as it was and let it be preserved.” It’s believed that this cell underneath the Neem tree is connected with Dwaraka Mai Masjid through a cave.
In it’s 10th chapter of Shri Sai Satcharita it has been mentioned that after his first appearance in Shirdi he stayed for about three years. Then he disappeared. After sometime within a year he was seen by one Chand Miyan in Nizam Kingdom in Aurangabad district. Thereafter he returned to Shirdi with a marriage party of Chand Miyan of Dhoopkheda, then he was twenty years old and then remained in Shirdi for 60years up to his last breath on 18th oct. 1918 on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dashami. In this way, it is said that Baba’s lifespan was 80 years and by reverse calculation he can be said to have been born in 1838 but not with certainty.

In the literatures available it has been repeatedly said, several times, that Shri Sai performed penance for 12 years here in the cave underlying the Guru Sthaan in the service of his Guru. But during his life span it could not have been possible because Baba when appeared and was seen first of all under the Neem tree he was said to be of only 16 years. Therefore it must be accepted very humbly that Shri Sai did the penance of 12years in his previous life span. Therefore, except the date on which Baba left his mortal body, all other dates mentioned above appear to be presumed. Till the end no one could trace and ascertain the date of birth, place of birth, parentage and even the religion of Shri Sai for sure. Even in Shri Sai Satcharitra it has been said that who could ascertain the birth of saints like Shri Sai.
We should accept that from the very beginning Shri Sai possessed supernatural powers. This fact is evident from so many illustrations mentioned in Shri Sai Satcharitra. The incident of burning four metal lamps after digging the surface in the enclosed cave is itself more than sufficient to show the spiritual power of Shri Sai. Therefore it can be said with firm conviction that Shri Sai was never born, instead descended at his will in 1854 in Shirdi under the Neem tree at the age of 16 years and left the mortal body on 18th oct. 1918 at his will, to repay the services of Baijabai by postponing the death of his son Tatya Kote.
