It was built by a Zamorin Raja during the powerful regime of Zamorins in 14-15 century as per historical evidences. The temple complex situates in around 1.50 acre land in a small hillock of Kokkozhikode in Chalappuram. When you enter the temple you will find a big “ Nandeeswara “ f

acing the Siva Linga in the spacious sanctum sanctuarium of the temple. In front of the’ Nandikeshwara’ there is a big ‘balikkallu’. The’ moola griha’ is very large and the speciality is that it has a granite ceiling unlike other temples in Kerla. The architecture of the temple is unique and different from that of similar type of temples in Kerala. The’ upadevathas’ are Ganapathi and Dharma Shastha with prabha and Sathya. There are one big vadavriksha and a big banyan tree along the pradhikshana vazhi of the chuttambalam. The main vazhipads are Dhara, offering ghee lamp to the deity. Koovala mala, pinvilakku etc. It is beleived that the diety is in’ Santhabhava’ and protects the entire people around. The diety is considered as very powerful and many have lot of miraculous experiences by praying in the temple. The temple is a beautiful sight to see when all the small lamps around are lit in auspicious days. The Siva Rathri festival is conducted in grand scale and the’ Annadhana’ on that day is fantastic. The temple tank is common to Siva temple and Chalappuram Shree Krishna temple and situates in front of Krishna temple 500 meters away from the Siva Temple. Now the trustee of the temple is Kottakkal Kovilakam and a temple committee of public is looking after the administration of the temple. This temple as it is today is the result of hardwork and efforts of our ancestors and others, who are not with us today. The Kokozhikode Thevar resides in the temple, in a Santhaswabhava mood, who protects the entire people around. The Naveekarana Kalasa which is to be held once in 12 years, is delayed for the past 50 years. Due to the good deeds of previous lifes of all of us Naveekarana Kalasa of this temple is held now as a Niyoga, Kalasa ceremonies are to be conducted from 2017 June 28th upto 8th July (1192 Midhunam 14th onwards upto 24th). These Kalasa ceremonies are conducted under the leadership and direction of Brahmasree Chennas Sankara Narayana Namboodhiri. Temples are really the source of the vital power of the Paramathma which permeates the entire universe. They are actually intended to preserve and sustain the flow of Paramathma Chaithanya by controlling its intermittent external flow as in a dam, confining the unseen Chaithanya in an idol that shines there. It is difficult for the common man to visualise the invisible Paramathma that permeats the entire universe. We are providing Nama, Roopa and Bhava to that formless source of energy in idols. In the Human concept of a Temple it is the physical body and the Devada installed inside is the Sookshma that means the outer and inner body. The Thantri or Priest is actually transmitting a small part of the vital force that flex in his heart to the Bimba Hridaya. The idol by his concentrated power of Penance and Mantra upasana and the unlively Bimba become Jeeva Chaithanya. The Temple Priests are preserving and strengthening this divine brilliance in the idols through poojas conducted daily in temples. The strengthening of divine sparks (Kala) in the idols is what is performed in the Prathishta Karma. Those who attend these installation ceremonies get the benefit of divine Darshana of a whole one year. There may be chances for forming impurities and defects in conducting rituals invisibly. To Overcome those sins and to Revitalise the power of Divine blessings, revitalising ceremonies are performed once in 12 years along with Ashtabhanda Nyas which have been prescribed by Acharyas. Even when Ashtabhanda which binds and holds together and strengthens the Bimba and Peedha which have Deteriorated or deformities occurred had to be fixed afresh by new Ashtabhanda Kalasha. If not, the flowers, the Abhisheka water, oil, Panchagavya etc., come down through Crevices will destroy peace and tranquility of Deva. This will lead to unrest and calamities among the temple authorities and the local devotees. Another important ceremony in temples is Karpooradi Dravya Kalasam which is the foremost and most dearest to Mahadeva. The result of such ceremonies is as follows: Those who conducts kalasam as a mode of worship are blessed with long life, fame, knowledge, strength and nobility, Destruction of sin and increase in Punya, or divine blessings.
