A long, long time ago, this place where the temple now stands was a wood teeming with bushes and black palms. Two old women who came to collect fire-wood saw two lighted stone lamps. They passed the news and the local people and their leaders made astrological consultations which revealed the divine powerful presence of Sree Bhadrakaali, worshipped by hundred and twenty seven powerful deities. The light of the lamp was emanating her powerful presence. Kotheswari
A goddess Kotheswary and another 21 goddesses are supposed to give all support to the main goddess. They are offered some kind of crude sacrifices which cannot be done within the temple precincts. Therefore is performed in some houses in Meenam in the Malayalam era before the astral sign ‘Aswathy’
Black Palm
It is supposed that the divine energy of the wood-deity, Valliyankaavil came and manifested itself as a stone-lamp under the Black Palm which is cherished as most scared. At the time the temple came into being it was a Brahmin called Mayankutty who used to perform the Pujas. The Goddess always responded to this sage the man call and was present where he was. He died without successors and the local people took up the responsibility. Such people became oracles. During those days there was no daily Pooja. Pooja was performed on the first day of every Malayalam month, in the month of Meenam on the day of the astral sign of Aswathy and on the tenth of the Malayalam month Medam. Later Pooja began to be conducted on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Once the idol was installed daily Pooja was begun. When there was no daily Pooja the spirit of the Brahmin Mayankutty was made to abide in the Narasimhaswami temple. A plot of land was given to those temple for the poojas for this spirit. Before the temple festival at Kuttikkat, offers are made at this temple and the flower and other offerings brought from there are placed at the inner temple threshold. This custom is observed even today.
