On January 29, 2025, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received His Excellency Mr. Geir Pedersen, UN Special Envoy for Syria, accompanied by a delegation from the Office of the Special Envoy, at the Patriarchal Headquarters in Bab Touma - Damascus.
The delegation included: Mr. Robert Dann, Principal Political Affairs Officer, Ms. Marwa Aly, Senior Political Affairs Officer, Mr. Galymzhan Kirbassov, Special Assistant to the Special Envoy, Mr. Faisal Irshaid, Political Affairs Officer, and Ms. Ranin Makhoul; National Political Affairs Officer.
The meeting was attended by His Beatitude Patriarch Joseph Absi, Greek Catholic Melkite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, His Excellency Bishop Romanos Hannat, Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Vicar of Damascus representing His Beatitude Patriarch John X, His Excellency Bishop Moussa Al-Khoury, Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Assistant, and Rev. Boutros Zaour, President of the Evangelical Churches in Syria.
Their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Assistant, and Mor Augeen Al-Khoury Nemat, Patriarchal Secretary, also attended.
During the meeting, His Holiness welcomed the delegation. He spoke about the change that is witnessed now as well as the challenges that need to be overcomed and transformed into opportunities to build Syria and help its citizens to live with dignity and freedom.
In turn, His Excellency spoke about the current situation in Syria, especially the various needs in Syria and the path towards the reconstruction of Syria.
