The Salesian presence in Kollam began in 1975, when the Parish of St Stephen (erected in the year 1800), with its Church and adjacent property was handed over to the Salesians in perpetuity by the then Local Ordinary, Rt. At present the parish comprises of 2108 families (about 9000 Catholics), mo
stly fisherfolk belonging to the backward and depressed classes. For a more effective pastoral ministry, the parish is divided into 12 wards, and there are 62 BCC communities functioning regularly and effectively. Activities:-
Basic Christian Communities, Boy’s Home, Career Guidance, Catechism, Chaplaincy, CFCA, Daily Youth Centre, FCDP (Fishermen Community Development Programme), LP School, Parish,Social work. Scope:-
> The education of the people to faith and morals through catechetical courses and catechism classes
> Planning and promoting the educational, economic, social and cultural development of the people
> The promotion of more educational facilities and competent personnel
> The promotion of Counselling and guidance especially to the youth
> The promotion of employment opportunities
> The animation of youth
