The heart must be purified. The whole world is filled with fear. Spiritual life is full of struggles. Subdue the subtle enemies such as lust, anger, and greed. At every step you will have to control your worldly desires, for otherwise they will certainly ensnare you. Pray silently and strengthen your willpower. Gradually everything will become favorable for you.

Truth has such a face that anyone who sees that face becomes convinced. The sun does not require any torch to show it; the sun is self effulgent. If truth requires evidence, what will evidence that evidence?

Continuing from the earlier talk on Love Without Attachment from Swami Vivekananda's Karma Yoga, this talk explores its application to one of the most difficult experiences of life: the loss of a loved one.

Sri Ramakrishna had already passed through the highest spiritual realizations, yet after the death of his young nephew Akshay, he described a pang of grief as though his very heart were being wrung like a wet towel. Holy Mother wept intensely after Sri Ramakrishna's passing, and the pain of separation remained with her for years, while Swami Vivekananda spoke years later of the pain surrounding the sudden loss of his father.

What, then, does unattached love mean in the midst of grief? How can we deeply mourn the loss of someone we love while still moving forward spiritually?

He is a true hero who performs all the duties of the world with his mind fixed on God. None but a very strong man could, while carrying a load of two maunds on his head, stop to admire a bridal procession marching past him.

Everything depends upon one’s mind. Nothing can be achieved without purity of mind. It is said, ‘The aspirant might have received the grace of the guru, the Lord, and his devotees; but he comes to grief without the grace of “one”.’ That ‘one’ is the mind. The mind of the aspirant must be gracious to him.

Surely God is there. Since we don’t yearn to know him, we can’t recognize his existence. If you want to realize God, you must accept pain and suffering and reject as crow droppings all honour, dishonour, and fear of public disgrace. Then only will his grace come.
