The Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was formed in a public meeting of Brahmos held in the Town Hall of Calcutta on 15th May 1878, 2nd Jaishta 1284 of the Bengali Calendar. A letter from the venerable Maharshi Devendranath Tagore communicating his blessings and prayer for the success of the new Samaj was read in the meeting. At the time of its foundation the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was headed by three men univ

ersally esteemed in Brahmo society for their high moral character. Of those three Ananda Mohan Bose was the youngest, scarcely more than 31 years at the time, yet he was placed at the head of affairs. Thus the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was launched into existence with these three distinguished men as its leaders.

The Sadharan Brahmo Samaj recently hosted the 135th All India Session of the Brahmo Conference as a day-long programme held on 6th December 2025 at the Prayer Hall and the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj Library.

The morning session commenced with a Kirtan, followed by devotional hymns presented by Sanskritiki, Kolkata. Sri Barun Chanda, President of the Conference, addressed the gathering and reflected on his upbringing within the Brahmo tradition. Sri Bimal Roy of the Indian Statistical Institute graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Sri Debashish Raychaudhuri, Chairman of the Organising Committee, also addressed the audience.

A thoughtful discourse followed between Barun Chanda and Ashoke Viswanathan, exploring the continued relevance of Brahmo values as experienced through their own formative years. Representatives from various Brahmo Samajes participated in discussions on contemporary issues, with delegates attending from Bangladesh, Indore, Assam, and other regions.

The afternoon session featured a panel discussion on the relevance of Brahmoism in the present day, moderated by Sunrit Mullick, with Nandini Jana among the panelists. This session also witnessed the inauguration of a book on the Genealogy of the Brahmo Samaj, translated into English by Tapas Roy, and formally released by Dr Clare Midgley of Sheffield Hallam University, along with Nandini Jana.

The programme concluded with an evening prayer conducted by Debashish Raychaudhuri, followed by a cultural programme, bringing the day’s proceedings to a meaningful close.
