At the ford of Jabbok, Jacob sent everything ahead. His family, his servants, all he had gained in twenty years. And the Bible says he was left alone (Genesis 32:24). For the first time, it was just Jacob and God.

As God blesses us and life fills up, our dependence on Him can slowly decrease without us even noticing. But no matter how much God blesses you, the relationship with Jesus is greater than the blessing.

More than family, friends, business, work, money, status, or position, may this be your declaration today: my relationship with Jesus is more important than anything else.

The Israelites had just walked out of slavery in Egypt, heading for land they had been promised. That land was already occupied. Ammonites, Amorites, Philistines, Canaanites, all of them watching a crowd of former slaves cross the desert toward them, waiting for the moment to attack.

“All the people among whom you live shall see the work of the Lord.” (Exodus 34:10)

Not quietly. Not in secret. In full view of the ones standing there expecting them to be wiped out.
God says do not be afraid. In their midst, He is for them. He will work for the people He made an agreement with, and He will prove it.

The crowd watching for the collapse may end up being the witnesses.

Our God is a covenant-making God.

A covenant was a binding agreement, and it never came without a sign. Something you could point at as proof it existed.

A sign placed on Cain. A rainbow for Noah. Fire passing through the sacrifice in Genesis 15. A throne for David. A priesthood for Aaron.

The church was given one too, and it isn’t a mark or a rainbow or stone. An engagement, sealed with the Holy Spirit placed in you as the guarantee.(Ephesians 1:13)

Exodus 34:1
"Cut two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke."

Moses had come down the mountain carrying the terms of Israel's agreement with God, written in stone. He found the people worshipping a golden calf they had built while he was gone, and he threw the tablets down and shattered them.

God's first instruction afterward is not a punishment. It's to cut new stone, because He intends to write the same words again.

He is not rejecting them. He is not setting them aside. He is starting over with them.

"I will make a covenant with you." A promise God binds Himself to, offered to people who had just broken the last one.

Whatever you broke, it’s not the end of your story.

Exodus 34:10
"Behold, I make a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth... for it is a terrible thing that I will do with you."

The Israelites had just walked out of slavery in Egypt. Moses went up a mountain to receive the terms of their agreement with God, and while he was gone, the people melted down their gold, built a calf, and worshipped it instead. Forty days in, the deal was already broken.

Moses came down and stood in the gap for them. And what God says next isn't a punishment. It's a fresh agreement, a covenant, a binding promise God holds Himself to.

Wonders not done in any nation on earth.
Done in full view of the people who watched them fall.
A terrible thing, in the older translations. Not frightening, but unthinkable. Bigger than anything they'd have thought to ask for.

And not something done to them. Something God does with them.

You may be standing at the end of a failure rather than the start of something. Receive this word in faith!

You don’t have to carry it all.

Not the comparison. Not the old wounds. Not the worry about tomorrow. When God is with you, He gives rest on every side, and He has already given His Son to prove how far His love will go for you.
